How much does it cost for a housekeeper or maid in Yucatan: Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Merida, etc?
Mitch Keenan - Mexico International Real Estate
In Merida, Mexico, you will pay the equivalent of US $15 - $20-usd a day for a GOOD housekeeper; one who is trustworthy and punctual about showing up reasonably on time.
You can find housekeepers for less, but then you get what you pay for. It is usually a good idea to find someone who is recommended to you by a reliable person who has lived here for a few years.
The same price and information would apply...

The same price and information would apply to gardener.

You are going to get different answers to the question of how much it costs for a housekeeper or maid in Yucatan and you are going to get people who will tell you that you are paying too much. We pay our house staff US $15 per day and here at the beach, we pay maybe a little higher than some but they are some good quality people that I can trust and I want the same people to come back all the time.

You can get a good housekeeper for as low as $13 to $15 a day. You can also get a good yard person for $15 to $17 per day. There are also companies that sell services and they have people who can come and clean your yard every week.

Gary De Spiegelaere - Celestun Properties
I live in Celestún, a beach community of about 7,500 inhabitants about 60 miles straight west of Merida on the Gulf Coast. The main economic driver here is the fishing industry and it is just starting to grow with tourism. We have a maid who comes to our house 2 days a week and works from 8 AM until 7 PM. We feed her breakfast, lunch, and snacks. She makes US $21 a day, which is a little bit higher than the average salary for a housekeeper here. She is well-paid for a maid...

She is well-paid for a maid but she also cleans a 6,000 square foot house in two days, including windows.
If you go to Merida, a lot of times you can get a housekeeper to work at your property for 8 hours a day for $15.
A housekeeper’s salary could differ depending on how far they have to travel going to and from your place. Our housekeeper takes a bus from the next village, which costs her about $3 a day for transportation.
In Tulum, Cancun, or the more touristy areas of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, you would probably get a housekeeper at around $30 to $35 a day. How hard they would work is dependent to how much you pay them.

We pay 230 Mexican pesos for a day of house cleaning, which translates to a little over US $13. We live in the city of Merida, in the Yucatan.

The cost for a housekeeper or maid in the Yucatan depends on the people hiring the help and on the area. For example, if you hire somebody from the small towns around Merida probably you will not need to pay a lot of money, perhaps 150 to 200 pesos per day (about US $8.30 to about $11.00) or probably less. But in the north of Merida where the wealthy people are located in Merida, a friend told me that they have to pay sometimes 300 to 400 pesos per day (about $16.60 to about...

Why is there such a difference? Because there is more demand in Merida than there is help. So if you have someone for 300 pesos and somebody who needs the same service offers 350 pesos for the service, the maid is going to leave you and go to the person who is paying 50 pesos more, and that's common.
In the centro of Merida, I hear the cost for domestic help is around 200 pesos per day. I don’t live exactly here in Merida right now and I pay 150 pesos per day for someone to clean the house and do some other stuff around the house. On average, you can count on 150 to 350 pesos a day depending on the area and the people. Sometimes if the maid sees that a potential employer is a foreigner, they try to take advantage of them because sometimes foreigners don’t know how much they have to pay, and they overpay.
I don't know from personal experience, but I would suspect that the cost in places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen would be more because these are tourist areas and a lot of services are paid in US dollars so the cost is higher, that’s for sure.

A housekeeper or a maid in the state of Quintana Roo (includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and here in Akumal) charges an average of 300 pesos (US $15) to clean the house and do other chores for about 5 hours a day, and may come once or twice a week.

If you have a stay-in housekeeper, you must provide room and board in addition to their monthly pay, as well as many of their other needs. Housekeepers in the Quintana Roo area do an amazing job and really work hard.
