How's the hiking and camping in and around San Miguel de Allende?

There are good places to hike here in San Miguel de Allende for sure. I am not certain if there is any camping because there could be scorpions and spiders. It is like in Southern California, Arizona or Texas.

There is some camping and a lot of hiking in San Miguel de Allende. Horseback riding is also very common here, which is a pretty cool experience. You can go horseback riding out in the Picacho Mountain Range. I’ve gone horseback riding there is it’s really fun. The horses are tame and it’s quite an experience. We also have a botanical garden that you have to hike to before you reach it. Just being in nature is the best thing. Most people go there during Semana...

The hiking in San Miguel de Allende is wonderful. There are parts of town where it’s a hike, and you can also go out of town. Hiking is a pleasure in San Miguel de Allende- there are endless trails that you can take, with different levels of difficulty.
Our family never camps in San Miguel de Allende because we have a cabin in the woods in the state Michoacán that’s just south of here, so if we want to go camping we drive there....

It’s a less common thing in San Miguel de Allende than in the States to just go up into the hills and set up your tent, but I certainly see a lot of those KOA places. There’s actually one outside of town. I don’t think camping is a Mexican thing, but I remember when I was a kid, my brother and I had that American thing of sleepovers, and that wasn’t a common thing in Mexico either.
We have our place in Lake Pátzcuaro, three hours from San Miguel de Allende. I certainly see a lot of people- Europeans and Mexicans, who are into camping in Lake Pátzcuaro. They have all the gear, and are obviously going there to go do their thing. If people here in San Miguel de Allende really want to go up to a beautiful lake where there are pine trees, they will go to Lake Pátzcuaro.

There are a lot of hiking options for people who like to get out, especially on the mountains that loom over Centro San Miguel de Allende. I'm not sure of any camping activities in San Miguel de Allende. There are a lot of people who go for horseback riding packages that also include ending up camping in a campsite for the night.

There is an area with a botanical garden in San Miguel de Allende right above the center of town, that's probably 500 - 600 acres, and a really cool place to hike. The area is not for a mountain climber looking for a serious challenge but a great place to get some exercise lots of natural vegetation, and you can see some old interesting ruins and an old dam. There are a lot of options in San Miguel de Allende as far as getting off the beaten path and looking around.
