Is the electricity reliable in San Miguel de Allende? Are there blackouts or brownouts in San Miguel de Allende?

There are blackouts and brownouts in San Miguel de Allende just like anywhere and even more so when it rains. Overall, electricity in Mexico is not a 100% reliable. Electricity goes out at least once a month in a good area.
My husband has a grocery store business in a not so good area and they have blackouts at least once a week from 10 minutes to 3 hours. When there’s a blackout, he has to close because the computers won’t work and he needs to...

My husband has a grocery store business in a not so good area and they have blackouts at least once a week from 10 minutes to 3 hours. When there’s a blackout, he has to close because the computers won’t work and he needs to keep the beer and other items in the fridge cold. The blackouts here have a big impact on his businesses.

When you move to San Miguel, it is important to take certain precautions to protect against black and brownouts. When heavy thunder and lightning storms hit, be sure to take action.
Here is a list of things to do and buy:
- Unplug your computers, cell phones, Internet modem, tablets, & appliances when storms approach.
- Invest in a couple of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) units with battery back-up. Be sure that they protect against surges,...

- Purchase several flashlights and have candles in an easily accessible place.
- Talk to your neighbors to make sure power outages have been reported. Don´t assume they have been.

In San Miguel de Allende, we don’t have blackouts or brownouts like we used to but we still experience them every once in a while. The power company could turn off the electricity if they are replacing a post and the blackout could last up to 8 hours.
Blackouts also usually happen when there is a building or a highway coming up. We had blackouts at least four times in the last year and each one was on a Sunday. When they turn the power off, it...

Blackouts also usually happen when there is a building or a highway coming up. We had blackouts at least four times in the last year and each one was on a Sunday. When they turn the power off, it doesn’t only affect one street, but the entire district. I don’t know why they like replacing posts on Sundays!
A brownout is very rare. I don’t even think there has been a brownout in the last 5 years. Overall, the electricity here is about 85% to 90% reliable.

Blackouts rarely happen in San Miguel de Allende. I’ve been here for 12 years now and in the last six years, we’ve only had one blackout. In the first six years, we had some blackouts occasionally.
There are some people who have generators at some of the larger homes but to have a generator is pretty uncommon. In the last five or six years there was only one instance of blackout that I can recall and it lasted for only about...

There are some people who have generators at some of the larger homes but to have a generator is pretty uncommon. In the last five or six years there was only one instance of blackout that I can recall and it lasted for only about five minutes. The city must have done something to prevent blackouts. I don’t know what they did, but it is working.

Here in San Miguel de Allende, we experience blackouts but they are very seldom. I have been here for 9 years now and I have experienced probably three blackouts in that span of time. The blackouts lasted for about 20 minutes, which is not an issue at all.
We don’t have generators here since it is not needed. We only get blackouts here in San Miguel if there is a big storm and lightning strikes one of the transformers. So it is extremely rare that...
