My husband has a grocery store business in a not so good area and they have blackouts at least once a week from 10 minutes to 3 hours. When there’s a blackout, he has to close because the computers won’t work and he needs to keep the beer and other items in the fridge cold. The blackouts here have a big impact on his businesses.

- Invest in a couple of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) units with battery back-up. Be sure that they protect against surges, spikes, & power outages.
- Purchase several flashlights and have candles in an easily accessible place.
- Talk to your neighbors to make sure power outages have been reported. Don´t assume they have been.

Blackouts also usually happen when there is a building or a highway coming up. We had blackouts at least four times in the last year and each one was on a Sunday. When they turn the power off, it doesn’t only affect one street, but the entire district. I don’t know why they like replacing posts on Sundays!
A brownout is very rare. I don’t even think there has been a brownout in the last 5 years. Overall, the electricity here is about 85% to 90% reliable.

There are some people who have generators at some of the larger homes but to have a generator is pretty uncommon. In the last five or six years there was only one instance of blackout that I can recall and it lasted for only about five minutes. The city must have done something to prevent blackouts. I don’t know what they did, but it is working.
