How bad are the mosquitoes and other bugs and insects in San Miguel de Allende?
Lane Simmons - RE/MAX Colonial San Miguel de Allende
Compared to where I come from in Austin, Texas, the mosquitoes and other bugs here in San Miguel de Allende are not much of a bother. We have mosquitoes that annoy me for a couple of months each year, and if I were building here today, I would certainly have screen windows on everything, but I’m not as bugged here as most places I’ve been.

There are no mosquitoes in San Miguel de Allende. There are some spiders but no mosquitoes. It is not humid here and San Miguel de Allende is high so there are no mosquitoes here. I could go out at dusk or dawn and not worry about getting bitten by mosquitoes. This is a big difference from the beach areas. When I lived in Playa del Carmen, the mosquitoes were awful. Anywhere near the water is awful because of the bugs and insects.

In San Miguel de Allende there are a couple of spiders that you need to be careful about, which are the black widow spider and the violin spider (brown recluse spider). They are here but I could only tell one instance where I actually saw one spider. There are supposed to be scorpions here in San Miguel de Allende because it is a semi desert but I haven’t seen any so they are not really a big problem here in San Miguel de Allende.

The mosquitoes and other bugs and insects in San Miguel de Allende are not as bad as in other places in Mexico like in the beach areas where it is humid. Here in San Miguel de Allende, I think flies are worse than mosquitoes. I have never heard of anybody here in San Miguel de Allende who contracted diseases like chikungunya or dengue, which are transmitted by mosquitoes.

The flies are the next annoyance here but it’s not that bad, either. When it’s warm, then there are times when you might have flies around. They are attracted to food so when you sit down to eat, you might see flies come. We have screens in the houses here so flies don’t bother us.

I have not had a problem with mosquitoes and insects where I live in San Miguel de Allende. You will find mosquitoes anywhere but it is not a problem here in San Miguel. San Miguel is 6,200 feet above sea level but we still have some mosquitoes. Houses here have screens on the windows to prevent insects from coming in but you don’t really have to worry about getting bitten by mosquitoes if you go outside.

I have a home where I spend several months out of the year in Northern California, which is known for having very few bugs. In comparison, San Miguel has slightly more bugs and insects but it is not really a huge problem.
