How's the economy in Puerto Vallarta?

This year has been really interesting because the exchange rate of the US dollar to the Mexican peso went from 12 pesos to a dollar to 18 pesos to a dollar, so we’ve seen a lot more Americans being able to buy a lot more, which has a positive impact on the community. At the same time, however, we see the purchasing power of the peso devalued, which has an effect not so much on local produce, but does have an effect on imported items such as clothing, electronics, housing...

The housing market in the Puerto Vallarta area has strengthened quite a bit. We’re seeing real estate sales continue to rise and prices stabilized, which is a good thing. In Puerto Vallarta proper there’s more construction going on, whether that construction is necessary or not right now. There are a lot of condos that have been on the market for quite a while and yet they’re building more condos, so maybe they see something that I don’t.
Here in Sayulita, about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta, where I live, we have a strong economy. There’s lots of opportunity for things, for new businesses to open. The businesses that are here do quite well, and so the economy is good here.
The economy in Sayulita is very heavily based on tourism. The housing market is also tourism based. Almost all the real estate is priced in US dollars, which is a good indicator of where the demand is coming. A few years ago when there was a swine flu scare and the US media was pushing propaganda about the narcos scenario expanding all throughout Mexico, which created a huge hit down here.

The economy of Puerto Vallarta is doing great. All the restaurants in Puerto Vallarta are full, and everything is good. Puerto Vallarta’s economy is mostly tourist-based, so it definitely would depend on tourism. The high season starts in November and ends in April, and that’s when Puerto Vallarta is busier.

Along with the tourism in Puerto Vallarta, construction is the main part of the economy. People buy second homes here in Puerto Vallarta, and there are also people who come to live here. Puerto Vallarta is hot and full of tourists.
