How much does it cost for a housekeeper or maid in Puerto Vallarta?

A housekeeper’s salary in Puerto Vallarta could differ depending on the size of the house that she will tend to because of the length of time that it will take for her to clean it. The going rate is from US $9 to $18 per day. Housekeepers usually work 8 hours per day.  If you have a smaller house then you can negotiate for a lower amount for the daily wage. Housekeepers here do an excellent job as most of them have already worked in hotels. You don’t have to worry about hiring somebody who could have been fired from her previous job because most of them have decided to quit their jobs in the hotel since they couldn’t commit to a full-time 8-hour job because of their families. Many of these housekeepers have newer families and so they prefer to have a part-time job.

That’s what one of my friends who lives near Marina Vallarta (a nice, expat area), pays every time his housekeeper cleans his entire house. His house has three floors, which is big enough for a family of five. It has a backyard, front yard, and sometimes the housekeeper prepares food, too. The housekeeper spends about 3 or 4 hours a day at my friend’s house.

The good thing about hiring through an agency is that you won’t have to worry about any issues with the local employees, as there are certain requirements by law that you must follow if you hire somebody directly, regardless if they’re working full time, part time, or just occasionally.

We have two housekeepers because the first person we wanted to hire was already booked, and since we have two infants, we needed more help. We’ve had our housekeepers for seven years, so they’re part of the family. Our housekeepers are welcome to anything, like if I’m cooking and they’re still there at dinnertime, I cook for them. Just like in the States, I give them a Christmas bonus of 2,000 pesos (about US $100) each. Our housekeepers do a great job.   The kids love them, and they love the kids just as much.

The Mexican government has a set-up where the employer and government pay monthly shares into an insurance-type arrangement for employees called INFONAVIT where the employee has medical and retirement benefits as options. The amount paid by the employer is determined by the amount of money the maids are paid on a weekly or monthly basis depending on how their pay scale is set up.

 

 

 

Employees can use their INFONAVIT benefits to purchase a new, very nice, but simple government-subsidized house or property. The Mexican government has built very large complexes and the houses there are available almost as a shell for locals to buy. This is an option the locals can exercise; some do and some don't. 

 

Some expats will just hire on a cash basis and have the maids come in once or twice a week. Mexico is still very much a cash country. A maid who comes for six hours once a week would cost around $15 or $20 per visit. 

 

We still use a lot of dollar transactions because there are so many Americans and expats living in Puerto Vallarta. If you go to a village or a smaller town in Mexico,you would probably pay in pesos. 

 

The greater Puerto Vallarta area would include Neuvo Vallarta, Punta Mita, and in the south would go all the way down to Mismaloya. You've got a higher average income in Puerto Vallarta because of the tourist trade and the inflow of both Canadian and US dollars. All the locals are dependent on the tourist business, which is a large percentage of Mexico's economy.
