What’s the architecture like in Los Cabos - La Paz, Mexico?
Lana Nixon - La Ventana Bay Properties
Because of the general freedom of the people who live here, and what they like to do, we have really got a huge variety or architectural designs between Los Cabos, La Paz, and La Ventana. (I live in La Ventana, which is a beach community 40 minutes from La Paz and about two hours from Los Cabos.) You can build whatever you want here. There are lots of great properties for sale. There are also lots of people who are talking to architects from all over the place and building homes so as a result, the architecture here doesn’t have a certain or a specific style.
In Cabo, you would more likely run into similar styles such as similar resort hotels and similar condo units, organized developments with community pools, and condominium structuring. You would see that in La Paz as well but out here in La Ventana, there is very little of that. Most of the places here are individual homes. La Paz has been around generally longer than Cabo so you would see more traditional type of architecture in La Paz than in Cabo. I see more traditional style accommodations in Cabo being built and perhaps that is because of the supply and demand. That is the type of accommodation that people tend to look for when they come. To me, Cabo feels more like a vacation community overall. La Paz does have traditional architecture but you have free spirits and people who build all kinds of things.
We don’t have cookie cutter houses in La Ventana. There is also nothing like that in La Paz because if there were similar housing in La Paz, those would be low income housing. Most of the homes in La Paz are foreign-owned and they do their own thing. They have had some trouble in La Paz getting flights because there are not enough hotel beds to warrant certain routes to fly into town. One reason is because there are so many individually-owned condos and individually-owned homes there. It is just a different style of life. You can come into town and you can really love it or you can hate it. Some people might come to La Paz and see that it is just not catering to their touristy needs enough. You could walk into one place and nobody speak English there. There is not a ton of gift shops in La Paz. If you want to find gift shops, you could go to Cabo where there are rows and rows of places that all sell gifts. You could also go to Todos Santos, which is a touristy spot on the west coast.

The common type of architecture here in Los Cabos and La Paz, and what most people like, is the desert architecture. I tried to put some antique things in my office because I prefer that when people come to my office, they see an antique office instead of a modern and luxurious one, which is more common. We have ancestros del decierto, or “antiques from the deserts.” In my office, we have some pictures that I selected myself. These are antiques from all over the world. We...

We have ancestros del decierto, or “antiques from the deserts.” In my office, we have some pictures that I selected myself. These are antiques from all over the world. We have one from Timbuktu, Morocco, Egypt, and other places. This is the architectural style that people in Cabo like.
People also like the Pueblo style. It is easy to achieve this style because you can find these things in the desert and you can easily mix them with the environment. It is very easy to create a desert feel in the architecture in Cabo. However, since Cabo is a mix of cultures you will also see some modern designs. The California style is very common in Cabo as well. You will see a lot of modern designs, especially in hotels. The most modern architecture that you will see are the hotels and the houses that are located in front of the beach. The houses that are away from the beaches usually have a desert kind of architecture.

There are many very good architects with extraordinary skills and taste in Los Cabos and La Paz. The biggest difference between the architecture in Mexico and in Canada and the United States is that construction in Mexico is not bound by as many restrictions so that the architectural styles can be more extraordinary, or paint colors could be brighter and more exuberant. The Mexicans prefer designs using concrete versus wood frame in houses, and this leads to a lot of flexibility and a lot...

The Mexicans prefer designs using concrete versus wood frame in houses, and this leads to a lot of flexibility and a lot of nice projects.
As an example, Mexican architecture has bigger overhangs and more sculpting in homes, walls and edifices. When it comes to taste, Mexican architecture is dominated by concrete, like what we normally see in Mexican homes. Homes made of concrete are more durable than wood frame houses and they can last a lot longer.
