Is the electricity reliable in Los Cabos - La Paz, Mexico? Are there blackouts or brownouts in Los Cabos - La Paz, Mexico?

We have a tremendous electrical and support system in Los Cabos and La Paz so blackouts rarely happen.
 
La Paz is moving like gangbusters towards using solar energy and other forms of energy. When we had that tremendous hurricane Odile, Cabo San Lucas was absolutely incredible. The electrical commission had convoy after convoy of big, heavy equipment coming in from the mainland to put that place back on its feet.

Electricity in the whole state of Baja California Sur is reliable, which would include La Paz and Los Cabos. However, in the summer when we have thunderstorms or hurricanes you can lose energy or power for hours or even days.  Longer outages happen only in the summer and mostly in September.

 

But from time to time we have power outages. For example, in my little town in the summer when there were storms we had power outages of 10 minutes, maybe 2 or 3...

But from time to time we have power outages. For example, in my little town in the summer when there were storms we had power outages of 10 minutes, maybe 2 or 3 times a week during the summer only.

 

It’s a good idea to have a generator when it’s hurricane season. In my case, we have one between 2 or 3 houses and we only use it to keep the fridge running or to quickly do repairs. So when there is a hurricane, people gather together in certain areas where we do have power where we eat together and we bring whatever we have so it doesn’t go bad.

Most of the houses in La Ventana, where I live (40 minutes southeast of La Paz) have electricity. There are some specific areas where electricity is not available but in La Ventana, about 80% of the houses here have electric supply. Most of La Paz has normal power supply so they don’t have any problem about electricity. In Los Cabos, there are also some area that don’t have electric supply and they use solar power. Some areas there are running on 100% on solar power.

CFE (Comision Federal de Electricidad) is the electric company in Mexico. If you have a contract with them, you will have reliable electric service. Sometimes it is good to have a backup generator because when there is a hurricane, it might cause damage that may cause blackouts that go for days or even a week but that only happens when there is a strong hurricane. The problem that some people encounter is that they keep a generator at home to prepare for this kind of calamity but once it is time to use the generator, it doesn’t work.
