What's the closest airport to Chapala and Ajijic, Mexico and what are the flights to and from Chapala and Ajijic, Mexico?
Thomas Hellyer - Chapala Home Sales
The closest airport to Chapala and Ajijic is Guadalajara International Airport, which is about 45 minutes away by car. The code letters for the airport is GDL. GDL has lots of international flights daily to much of North America.
We just got some direct flights into Portland. We don’t have direct flights from Canada yet but I hope that happens soon. That would be huge when that happens. But there is a couple of hundred flights everyday at the Guadalajara International...

From Guadalajara, I would say that the majority of the flights are to connecting flights to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Boston, and Atlanta.

You can fly direct to LA, and there are probably half a dozen flights to California, and maybe a couple times a day in some cases—Ontario, LA, San Francisco, Tijuana. I’ll bet there are a dozen flights to Tijuana every day.

It costs me $800 to fly myself and my two kids up to California and back to Tijuana. From Tijuana, you get off the airplane, and at baggage claim, there is an elevator up to this new bridge they built. You will walk about 300 feet, take another elevator down, and you are already in the US. You just have to declare customs or not, and you’re there. There is a nice modern parking lot and passenger drop-off/pick-up zone there, too.

From our house in North County San Diego, it is 35 minutes to the San Diego Airport and 42 minutes to Tijuana Airport. It is only a 7-minute difference, which is nothing in Southern California traffic.
The airport in Guadalajara is an international airport. It has flights to various destinations in Mexico so you can travel all around Mexico from Guadalajara. It has numerous destinations in the Southwestern US including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Oakland, Seattle, a couple in Texas, New York, Chicago, and Florida. You could get direct flights to the US from Guadalajara. You could also get direct flights to San Jose, Costa Rica, Guatemala City, and I believe San Juan, Puerto Rico. The one that they complain a bit about is Canada. I guess we could use more direct flights to Canada but you could definitely get to Vancouver and Toronto directly. Guadalajara is 20 minutes away from Chapala and about 25 minutes from Ajijic.

One of the biggest advantages of living at the Lake Chapala / Ajijic area is the existence of Guadalajara less than an hour away. Like many things in the Lake Chapala area, the existence of a 5 million inhabitant city close enough but not too close is just right.

Very fortunately, the airport in Guadalajara, Guadalajara International Airport (officially known as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla) is located at the southern edge of Guadalajara, which is the edge closest to Lake Chapala. This means that, in order to use the airport, residents from Lake Chapala don’t have to first drive through Guadalajara to get to it.

While a very small fraction of the size of an airport like LAX, or the airports in Chicago or Dallas, the airport in Guadalajara does have some direct flights to the US and Canada. Flights to the US that are not direct usually have one stop-over. If you’re flying to more exotic locations, perhaps in Europe, you could also go through the airport in Mexico City.
One of the great advantages of the relative size of the airport in Guadalajara is that it is quite manageable. It’s easy to get in to and easy to leave. There is parking right next to the terminal at very reasonable prices.
Another great advantage (and this goes for any airport in Mexico) is that travel from one airport to another airport in Mexico is extremely reasonable. For example, you can fly from Guadalajara to Juarez (walking distance from El Paso) for about USD $30 one way (no; that's not a typo).
