A couple of years ago, there was a tournament of small sailboats but in general, there are not too many activities on Lake Chapala because it is shallow. Local fishermen consider the lake dangerous because of the whirlpools that form in it due to the opposing currents created by the winds coming from different directions of the lake. The local fishermen have learned to read these winds by experience and have names for these winds. Some people who do not know how to predict the winds get in trouble when they get in the water. You could drown in it so you have to know the lake and be careful. Lake Chapala is a long and shallow lake and though it is beautiful to look at, it could be dangerous. You have to respect the lake.
