How is the dental care in Chapala and Ajijic, Mexico?
Santiago Hernandez - Chapala Med
My dentist here in Mexico was trained in Colombia but she has a good grasp of the English language. She doesn’t have all the modern facilities that maybe some of her colleagues or competition has but for my needs, the dental care she has provided has been just fine.
I had veneers put in and she did an excellent work. The prices are very competitive; around 1/3 of what it costs in the US. My dentist has all the equipment needed to meet my needs. If she doesn’t have...

I had veneers put in and she did an excellent work. The prices are very competitive; around 1/3 of what it costs in the US. My dentist has all the equipment needed to meet my needs. If she doesn’t have the equipment to do a certain procedure, she would get somebody who does have the equipment and was trained to do it.
I know of a particular dentist here who went to high school in Houston, Texas and whose grasp of the language is very good. He is probably the cheapest dentist here. I have seen his ads for a dental cleaning for 150 pesos, which is only $10. I believe that if you have a bigger patient load, you may tend to be a little hurried and your quality of care may be affected. I have not heard about any bad reviews about this dentist, maybe because his patients are conscious of the fact that they are getting what they are paying for. I know of other people who may pay twice as much as what the inexpensive dentist charges but they are very happy and the quality of the care and work is something they (and I) really appreciate.
There are a couple of dentists here in Chapala or Ajijic that have dental facilities that are the same as what you would see in a dental clinic in the US. They tend to work in homes that were renovated to become a dental office. The equipment that they use is the same as what is used in dental clinics that I saw when I grew up with in Chicago.
In the Chapala area alone, there are about 35 dentists, so there are plenty to choose from. You wouldn’t need to wait more than a day to see your favorite dentist.

The dental care in Ajijic and Chapala is excellent. I get all of my dental care down here.
In addition to offering good quality, the cost is less. For example, the cost for a crown is $400 USD start to finish, whereas in the US, the cost for a crown is approximately $2,000.
People come to Ajijic specifically to get bridgework, tooth implants and other similar work done. The quality of the dental work here is...

Dental care in Chapala and Ajijic is about 1/3 of the price in the United States or Canada. We work with a dental clinic here with a dentist named Edgard Macias who has a large dental clinic called Dental Express. They have absolutely the top equipment you could buy. It is even better than some of the equipment that you can buy in the United States and the prices to the patients are not even 1/3 of the price in the US. Dr. Macias is really good. You can have all your dental work done within one week and it is so much less expensive. You can come down here on vacation, have your dental work done, and have a fun time at the same time. I have personally used their services and we send patients to them, too.
To get a cleaning here in Chapala and Ajijic costs around US $20. A friend of mine recently had terrible teeth problems and he was quoted $35,000 to $40,000 in the US to fix everything. He went to Dr. Edgar and had the same work done and it cost him only $3,000. Dr. Edgar can also do a full set of dentures, at a cost of about $3,000, and it is top quality.

Dental care is what brought me to the Lake Chapala / Ajijic area. My dentists and her friends are who sent me here by quoting such astronomical prices. I saved so much, really, like 80%, it's hard to believe.
My dentist here in the Ajijic area had all the credentials, experience, spoke English, had the best local reputation, and was vetted by my nurse inspector partner. All around, it was a better experience than I had in the States, and I had a good dentist...

The dental office we go to here in the Lake Chapala / Ajijic area is more modern than the one I used to go to in the US and provides better care. Here’s a video of our experiences there.
I forgot exactly how much we pay for cleanings, but I believe it is around US $30. I was mentioning this to a local expat recently who scoffed and told me that she paid $12.50 and was very satisfied. When I told her that I believed it was possible to pay too little for a...

When I told her that I believed it was possible to pay too little for a cleaning, she exclaimed, “It’s only a cleaning!”. I paid $130 per cleaning in the US, and it was no better than the one I receive here for less than a quarter of the cost.

Due to a botched dental job in the US, my wife recently had to have what the dentist here in Ajijic called a filling, which I saw as fixing a chipped tooth. When we asked when we should return to have it done, the dentist told us she could do it right then. Twenty minutes later, my wife’s chipped tooth was perfect (there was no way I could see where the work was done), and while I forgot the cost because it was so reasonable, I believe it was around $40. Problem solved.
I had to have a root canal recently on a molar, which was fairly challenging. The job was done perfectly. Again, I forgot the cost because it wasn’t a big deal, but I believe it cost me around $350. The same would have cost me over $1,000 in the US.
