To drive in Mexico, do I need Mexico automobile insurance?
Brenda de Groot - AvensaTravel
Before, driving in Mexico did not require automobile insurance. Now, in order to drive you are obligated to have one. They are more lenient in Mexico. If you don’t have it, you get a fine but it is not that much of a punishment. I personally think it is better to have insurance. I have car insurance and I highly recommend it.

If you have a US car, it is recommended to have Mexican auto insurance to cover any damages if you are driving in Mexico. In Baja, California, where I live, having auto insurance is not necessary. There have been some new laws that regulate people to have car insurance. The new car owners in Mexico, however, are required to have car insurance for cars bought in Mexico. If you are coming from the US and you’re driving to Mexico, or if you are moving and you are bringing your US car...

To drive in Mexico, you don’t need Mexico auto insurance, but you have to have some kind of auto insurance even if it’s from the United States. To drive here, you need a driver’s license. If your car is a US-plated car, you have to have a correct permit.
If you don’t have auto insurance and you have an accident, you will pay damages out of pocket. Besides the expenses, you could have a penalty for not having auto insurance and...

If you don’t have auto insurance and you have an accident, you will pay damages out of pocket. Besides the expenses, you could have a penalty for not having auto insurance and you don’t want that. Getting auto insurance to drive in Mexico is better for your pocket and your safety and the safety of the third party.

You should check with your existing insurance company to see if it covers you in Mexico. Most insurance companies will cover you in all of North America except Mexico. Anybody who's traveling to Mexico really should make sure their insurance company covers them in Mexico. In Mexico, you cannot be without insurance. At minimum you have to have liability - if you don’t, they can give you a fine but not put you in jail.

Most warranties for people who bring their cars down from the US and Canada are not covered in Mexico, which is very important for them to know. For example, when you buy a brand new Ford Escape, your warranty in the US and Canada will not cover in you Mexico. However, when they buy a car in Mexico, or from S & S Auto, it's covered in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. That warranty's covered in all of North America.
