What are the sports and games in and around Mexico?

Baseball is huge in Nicaragua where I used to live but I don’t remember seeing people playing baseball much in the areas that I’m in in Mexico. I know they like baseball, too, but I didn’t know if it is as big as soccer, for example.

Futbol (soccer) is Mexico’s number one sport. Futbol to a Mexican is like hockey to a Canadian. Mexicans are futbol fanatics. When Mexicans travel, they travel big time, especially the ones with money. They enjoy themselves and like to be in luxurious places where they spend their money, enjoy the culture and know the rest of the other parts of the world. That’s one amazing thing about Mexico. People from the village who don’t have a lot of money may go to Paris to watch a soccer game, or to Dallas or Canada to go skiing up in the mountains.
Although Mexico has never won the World Cup, Mexicans will travel to wherever they have to go to watch their team play, and it’s just amazing how they do that. They patronize their soccer teams and develop soccer players.
“Chivas” means “little goat.” When Chivas is playing in the Omnilife Stadium in Guadalajara, you’re going to be stuck in traffic for three hours with trails of people going in and out the stadium if you drive anywhere near it.
Another sport Mexicans like is baseball. Mexicans also like basketball and football. My father in law was a big basketball fanatic. He used to play at this club. There are some good Mexican players who have come up through the ranks. I see it on Mexican news. The NFL has played in Mexico City several times. In fact, every year they do one or two games in Mexico City, and it’s well-received.
Mexicans love golf, too. They have always paid a lot of attention to golf and they’re pushing to get their kids into a type of circuit in the United States because they realize that’s the only way they’re going to get connected in professional golfing. Lorena Ochoa, a fantastic golfer, came out of nowhere but is now a famous golfer.
Games like futbol are more popular in Mexico than golf because in futbol, all you need is a ball. It’s the sport of the people because it’s inexpensive. You can play futbol in your bare feet if you want. I have a soccer net in my back property for my son.
Relatively speaking, golf is an expensive sport in Mexico. I play golf in the Chapala country club and we sponsor Mexicans who are coming up in the ranks to try and get them a professional career in golf.

Mexicans start playing soccer at a very young age and compete in soccer leagues for kids starting at six to seven years old. In the northern part of Mexico, there's baseball, which is becoming more popular. There is now a semi-professional baseball team in Guadalajara. They play some American football in Guadalajara though it’s not really big, but they have it. Basketball has become pretty big in Mexico now. There is also volleyball.
