In Oaxaca, we have several eco projects in the mountains. Small villages in the mountains joined forces together and organize hiking tours. They made nice cabins with amazing views and are conserving their woods. To hike in the mountains it is better to go with a local guide. You hike from one village to another and sleep in cabins with lovely views over the mountains. You have hikes for one day until 5 days.
In Chiapas, you have hikes that you can do for two hours or several days. It is amazing how much beautiful nature Chiapas has. During your hike you can see lots of waterfalls, cenotes, enormous ceiba trees, and different animals like toucans, macaws, monkeys and if you are lucky or unlucky, puma´s and jaguars! That is of course a joke, pumas and jaguars do live in Chiapas, however, the chance of meeting them in the wild is very small. If you hike in Chiapas, you discover something new every time, and sometimes it feels like you are discovering places that no one has seen before. There are hikes for beginners and experts. It’s always advisable to take a local guide with you so you will not get lost and he can explain about the plants and the animals.

Alfonso Galindo - I Go Yucatan
I didn’t realize how very popular hiking and camping was with Mexicans, and how people within the larger cities so much being able to appreciate greener spaces. Camping and hiking and exploring the wilderness are quite popular in Mexico.
There are plenty of day trips that people of Mexico City go on, to visit the surrounding areas. In Monterrey, another big city of Mexico, the inhabitants take advantage of the surroundings to go on day trips and go on hiking, river...

Mexicans seem to enjoy not only their outdoor activities, but also being able to escape and go maybe to the family ranch or hacienda and ride their horse. Mexicans love family activities and love getting out of the city and enjoying the outdoors.
Mexico does have campgrounds, and I have seen the international KOA sign for camping. There are many camping locations in state or federal national parks but they are also available in other places throughout Mexico.

RV-ing is quite popular in Mexico. It took a downturn during some of the violence in the north where people are scared to come down to Mexico, but the Pacific side of Mexico has quite an established infrastructure of modern, small RV parks. There are also many hotels along the Pacific side and Baja California that cater to RVers. They may not have the amenities but RVers are known to come down to Mexico. There are about 8.5 million RV owners in the US, and from those, according to the last statistics I read, 3 million RVers a year come to Mexico. There are a handful parks along the Gulf side with the two major ones along Quintana Roo (a state in Mexico in the Yucatan Peninsula, facing the Caribbean).
