Can I buy furniture in Mexico?

Yes, you can buy good furniture in Mexico. In the big cities of Mexico, you will find different furniture stores similar what you see in the US. I think it is always better to buy furniture from the local people here than to import it. The local people sell very nice and good furniture and this way you also help the local economy.

Local carpenters make beds, closets, or other furniture out of wood, and once they finish a few pieces of furniture, they go to the center and sell them on the streets or to the local markets. I am not sure how much they cost but I do not think that you will spend more than 1,000 pesos (US $58) for a bed frame. Alternatively, if you buy a bed frame from one of the big international stores here, like walmart, you would easily spend 5,000 pesos ($295) on a bed frame. So buying from a local craftsman is much less expensive, and you are helping the local economy.
If you buy furniture from a local craftsman, you can also get it custom-made for you. If you need a closet to be a bit different or if you have your own design, you can ask the local craftsman to make it. The same goes for other local goods such as clothes. If you have a specific design, you can have it custom made. It is still very common here in Mexico to buy your own fabric, take it to the seamstress, show her your design, and they would sew that custom made dress for you.

Depending on the area that you are moving to in Mexico, there might be really good furniture stores. There are lots of furniture stores in Mexico where you can buy good quality furniture just like in the US. We also have stores like Home Depot, Costco, Walmart, etc. Most of them are in the large cities.

However, if you are moving into one of the smaller towns, you might not have access to furniture stores that sell nice furniture. If you are living close to the border of US and Mexico, you can do your shopping in the US and bring your purchases home to Mexico. You are allowed to cross with around US $150 worth of merchandise from the US into Mexico without paying import taxes on them. If your purchases are in excess of $150, then you pay taxes on the amount in excess of $150.

You can buy all kinds of furniture in Mexico. You’ll find basic and high-end furniture and everything in between, depending on what you want. There are so many furniture stores in Mazatlán that offer whatever you want. Fifteen years ago, furniture stores were few and very far in between. Now, you can find a lot of nice furniture in Mazatlán.

I just bought a large reclining massage chair here in Mazatlán which was made in the US. Furniture in Mexico is much cheaper than what you’d find in Canada. The same large reclining massage chair in Canada would have cost me CA $6,000 -7,000 (US $4,500 - $5,200), but in Mazatlán, it only cost CA $3,000 (US $2,200).
Mexico does have Mexican brand furniture which is very nice. There is some very good furniture made in Mexico. Most of the time, whenever we want to purchase furniture, we go to the store and we don’t really ask where it’s made.
Fifteen years ago when we bought our first condo, we had custom-made furniture because it was so hard trying to find good furniture back then. We had our bed, couch, table, etc. made in Mexico fifteen years ago and it cost a fraction of what it would have cost in Canada. Now, here in Mazatlán you can find any kind of furniture you can imagine.

I would recommend looking around for local furniture makers. In my town there are two men who make different styles of traditional straight chairs. I also love Equipali chairs which are possibly made of horse hides. There are other traditional seating designs that can be explored, including traditional chairs you can get made. They are made southeast of Guadalajara in a small town.

Often you can find them on weekends when people put out wares along the road. I plan to have simple platform beds and case goods custom made as local chain stores are centers of particle board. In areas such as Polanco in DF and along route north to Tlanepantla there are several high end furniture stores and much of it is quite nice. These would be in larger cities. My town also has an upholsterer whom I plan to check out.
Many Mexican women learned to knit and crochet in school. Bring your wool and you can design your sweater and have it made. Mexico: land of endless possibilities.
