When a person who has worked hard all their life and been in the grind and just spent their whole life going from appointment to appointment, from job to job, hour after hour, nose to grindstone, this place is absolute heaven in comparison.A person who comes down on a retirement package or social security can find the healthcare they need, can find a wonderful place to call home, and have the comforts of home that they need or going to need as they grow older and not have to worry about huge taxes or the government taking things away from them. Living here in Mexico provides a huge amount of security for someone at the retirement phase of his or her life.

The second best reason to retire to Mexico is that the cost of living is much cheaper. So, for example, if you’re retired in the US and you’re receiving a set and limited amount of money or Social Security from the government in the US and you’re living on and off in Mexico then that amount of money can be extended for a longer period of time.

The best reason to retire in Mexico is the quality of life. In Chapala and Ajijic, I enjoy the sound of church bells, roosters and horses clomping down the cobblestones, which is my favorite. There's less materialism in Chapala and Ajijic, which I found wonderfully refreshing. Whether it was Christmas or any other time of year, there just wasn't this need to fill a void by buying things. Chapala and Ajijic has a slower pace of life for most people. It's so nice that people in Chapala and Ajijic greet you on the streets. It would be considered very rude to walk by a Mexican and not acknowledge one another, even in the big cities such as Guadalajara. When we walk into a restaurant in Guadalajara and we're passing a table of people who are eating, we’ll say “buen provecho”, which means, “enjoy your meal.” We always acknowledge each other. I find this custom really endearing and very charming.

Depending on where you are, it is easy to return home in five to eight hours and you're back to where you came from. This is an important reason to retire to Mexico in contrast to Costa Rica or some other locations you may want to consider. Another reason is affordability. There's a diversity of options to live in Mexico when you consider climate, temperatures, geographic features, and cultural differences within Mexico. You can live in the Lake Chapala area. You can live on a beach. You can live in San Miguel de Allende, in the central areas, or further south in places like Oaxaca.
There are a lot of different interesting things in Mexico such as plants, birds, architecture, and artifacts. There are different art mediums like sculptures, fabric art, and weaving. There are many really good museums.
In some of the larger cities in Mexico, there is excellent shopping. You can go to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and other larger cities and you will never know that you're not shopping in Canada, the US, or some place in Europe.

Being here in Mexico, the proximity to the States to be able to go back and forth is an advantage.
Another reason why I like it here in Mexico, especially in the Lake Chapala area, is what I hear from some people who have come from Panama and Ecuador to try and retire in these countries who have said that Mexico has a lot more to offer to make you feel like a part of the local community. There are a lot of activities going on and they can volunteer for different things. There is a lot to do like go to the theater and watch concerts.
Some of those who came from Panama and Ecuador have told me that they didn't speak the language in these countries well and because of this language barrier, they felt like there weren't enough social activities for them and the community wasn't as big. This is why they moved to the Chapala and Ajijic area.
This is one of the reasons why I moved to the Chapala and Ajijic area, too. There are a lot of foreigners who do a lot of different activities. You name it. There's a kayak club, hiking clubs, cooking clubs, garden clubs, and all sorts of other clubs.
