What are typical Mexican desserts and dessert recipes?
Gary De Spiegelaere - Celestun Properties
The typical Mexican desserts that we find in this area (Yucatan Peninsula) are mostly bread-based and usually extremely sweet. One example is the three milk cake, which is quite moist and very sweet, and is one of the more popular desserts here in Mexico. Other popular desserts here include a loaf of very sweet bread with some fruits and nuts and one made of pudding with lots of sugar. Every dessert here has massive amounts of refined sugar!

The typical desserts in northern Mexico are a little bit closer to what you would find in the US, with the exception that they don’t make the deep chocolate cakes that you will find in US. The cakes you find in Mexico are made of lighter chocolate.

Another typical dessert in Mexico is the leche flan. It has different recipes as well. One is where they put Philadelphia Cheese (cream cheese), eggs, condensed milk, and vanilla. To make the flan, you have to first melt some sugar in the serving container. Then you put all these ingredients together and mix them. Pour the mixture in the container with melted sugar and cover the container. Put it in the oven for a few minutes. The end product will have the texture of a jelly but it is milk.
One more popular dessert in Mexico is arroz con leche, which is sweet white rice pudding with milk and cinnamon sugar topping. To make this, you have to cook white rice, and on a pan, put some milk, sugar (or any kind of sweetener like Splenda), vanilla, and some cinnamon. Mix all of these ingredients together with the white rice.

Michael Eager - La Nueva Posada Hotel & Restaurant
The most popular dessert in Mexico is Pastel de Tres Leches. It's a cake made with three different types of milk. You use regular milk, heavy cream, and the skim on the top of boiled milk. Traditionally in all of Mexican villages, they wouldn't go to the supermarket to buy a liter of milk. Instead, there's a guy who would wander through the village with his horse selling milk out of old-fashioned milk containers.

Every day, the first thing that my wife would get our girls to do is to throw the milk, but she would save and freeze the skim part that would curdle on top. This is what she uses to make Pastel de Tres Leches, which is a Mexican favorite.
There is the flan, a local favorite, which is like custard. Another dessert is ice cream or popsicles covered in powdered hot peppers, which is a very popular dessert.

Mexican people love cooking fruit with "piloncillo" (Mexican brown sugar). For example, "calabaza" (squash) is cut in slivers and baked in the oven basted with sugary syrup.
Mexican people love having desserts. It is a tradition at the end of a meal to have something sweet.
At night time, locals have a glass of milk and sweet bread. Another thing that Mexicans do that's very affordable is having a whole selection of sweet breads called "pan dulce" that are covered with sugar and come in different shapes and sizes.
