How much does it cost for a housekeeper or maid in Mexico?

Many people in Mexico have housekeepers or maids because they are not so expensive. The cost per day for a housekeeper in Mexico is around 200 to 300 pesos (US $12 to $18). You can ask them to clean and help you with your children. It’s very normal in Mexico to have household help. It is also still common here to help young teenagers from small villages or mountains by taking them in to your house. They help you with the household and in return you give them a nice place to sleep and provide them with food. You can also help them to go to school. Sometimes, the homeowners give the teenagers extra money but the youngsters’ parents are already happy that their kids have the opportunity to go to school and learn.
If you compare the cost of housekeepers and maids in Mexico to European countries, the cost here in Mexico is quite cheap.

The cost for a housekeeper or maid in Mexico for more or less a daily basis would be around US $350 monthly, for somebody who would go in in the morning and be there half a day, every day, from 9AM to 3PM; 6 hours, more or less.
If you need to have someone come in just once a week, it would cost you about 200 pesos (about US $11) each time they come.

A housekeeper in Mexico can charge about 150 - 200 pesos ($8 - $10) for 5-6 hours of work per day, or 1,000 - 1,500 pesos ($50 – $75) per week if she comes in every day. If the housekeeper lives with you, it’s a completely different arrangement because you’re going to give her a place to live, water to use, and three meals a day, so you can make a different arrangement with the housekeeper. Having a full time live-in housekeeper can cost around 10,000 pesos ($500) a month.
Most of the people in Mexico do not separate the live-in housekeeper’s free time from her working hours. That means if it’s 8 o’clock at night, they might call her and ask her to do something, and she’ll have to do it because she’s there. It’s going to depend on the arrangement that you will have with her.
The minimum wage in Mexico is 70 pesos ($4) daily, but we all know that’s not enough, and it’s unfair. It’s a really low income for anyone to hold a family. A full time stay-in housekeeper who makes 10,000 pesos ($500) a month can have a good life.

Here in Mazatlán, we pay our maid 300 pesos (US $17) for working 3 hours a week. The rates that housekeepers charge you in Mexico can be a lot cheaper depending on which part of the town you live in.
For example, since we’re in a high-end community in Mazatlán, housekeeper rates are a bit more expensive than in other places in Mazatlán. If you live in Centro, where the cost of living is higher, housekeepers charge from 100 –...

Our housekeeper does an excellent job. I don’t think anyone else can do a better job than my housekeeper. Our housekeeper pays good attention to detail and is very honest. For example, If she finds a penny on the floor, she’d put it on the table instead of keeping it.
Our housekeeper is a very nice lady who’s always busy. Almost everyone I know wants to hire our housekeeper. Since we expats all know each other, we basically pay the same rate.
We have another condo unit in the same building which is 700 square feet- smaller than the one we live in. We pay our housekeeper in that condo 200 pesos ($11) for 2 and a half hours of work. She comes in once a week and cleans the windows, the floor, and everything else. She does top to bottom spring cleaning for us every year. She works fast and is a very nice lady.

There is a new law now regarding domestic workers whereby we shall be required to pay into a government account so our domestic workers will have medical care. I’m not sure how much that will be but most people agree that it is fair as they should have access to the hospital benefits that other workers have. But of aware of that. There are pay companies that are called “Pagadoras” where a worker can register as working for that company, and we pay their salary plus an administrative fee, and they take care of all of the taxes. I’m looking into that as it can be very favorable to us, as the employee cannot sue us in a labor suit, as they ar empl d by the Pagadora, not us. You may have heard of people ending up having to pay a whole lot of money if they fire someone! So keep your eyes open on what’s being said about that all over the Internet.
