Popocatépetl 5,426 m (17,802 ft) is in central Mexico and about 70 km (43 miles) from Mexico City. It is the second highest mountain in Mexico.
The Volcán de Colima (Volcán de Fuego), 3,820 m (12,533 ft), also known as Volcán de Fuego, is the youngest of the three and is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico and in North America.
El Chichón is in the northwest part of Chiapas, Mexico. When it erupted in 1982 it created the largest volcanic disaster in modern Mexican volcano history. Nine villages were completely destroyed and 2,000 people died.
Volcanoes are found throughout Mexico with 16 in Baja California, the Mexican Islands, and Northwestern Mexico. Twenty-four more are found in Central and Western Mexico. Two volcanoes are found in Southern Mexico.
Probably the most famous Mexican volcano has been the Volcán de Parícutin located in the state of Michoacán in western Mexico. It appeared suddenly in the cornfield of a farmer in 1943 and immediately caught the attention of the entire world. The volcano was active for nine years and received a tremendous amount of scientific study. It is still a tourist attraction and the Cable News Network (CNN) has listed it as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World”.
Just south of the United States and north of Puerto Peñasco, Mexico is a huge desert reserve, El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes the Pinacate volcanic. One of the features is the Elegante crater, which is 1.6-km-wide.
