Are there hurricanes in Mexico?

Yes, there are hurricanes in Mexico. Hurricane season usually starts in July or August and can run through as late as late October.

Some of these can be quite strong as well. As this is being posted, Hurricane Patricia is just hours away from making landfall in Mexico on the Pacific side, and is reported to be the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic and the eastern North Pacific basins. While strong hurricanes are not an occurrence every year, every once in a while, we do get one that is dangerous. It is best if you live in an area of Mexico that can be affected by hurricanes to be prepared.
Most of the time, however, it is a lot of rain but it is nothing too dangerous. Sometimes it rains so much that iit causes flooding problems.
We don’t get a lot of hurricanes here in Oaxaca, where I live, and which is a good deal south of where Hurricane Patricia is expected to make landfall in Mexico. If there is a hurricane on the coast, it rains for a whole day here. If you live here you will find a day or even two days with rain quite nice as normally we have every day blue sky and sun!

Of course when you are here a few days on holiday its not nice to have rainy days, so if you decide to go on a holiday in July - September and sometimes in to even late October, realize that there is always a risk that there might be a hurricane and you might have have rainy days.
