Are there floods and flooding in Mexico?

There are floods sometimes in Mexico but I’ve never personally been in a place with a flash flood. The last time I saw a flash flood was when I was in Tampa, Florida and in Las Vegas. I’ve never seen flooding in Mexico before. I’m sure there is flooding on occasion but it wouldn’t be something that I would tell people to specifically worry about.

The most vulnerable areas for flooding in Mexico are in Tabasco, which is in the southern part of Mexico and north of Chiapas. Sometimes there may be floods or landslides in some rural areas in the mountains such as in another central state called Puebla.

There were no deaths because the government of Mexico is strong in civil protection so in times of tragedies, there aren't a lot of human casualties. Damage to property may be big, but this cannot be avoided because of the natural phenomenon.
This is an exception to the rule, but sometimes flooding occurs in some cities with a high amount of rainfall once a year and the city is developed on land that used to be a dry river. The people most vulnerable to flooding are the poorest people. Even in the area of Lake Chapala, some people have settled in land where water courses such as dry or shallow creeks exist and these creeks would swell with water once a year.

In Ajijic, there are mountains in the back portion of the area. There is a natural phenomenon called "la culebra" (the snake) wherein there is a certain type of cloud precipitation and atmospheric pressure where warm and cold air comes together and produces heavy rainfall that is funneled onto one area, which causes landslides.
In 2007, this occurred in the town of San Juan Cosala, which is about 25 minutes to the west of Ajijic. Landslides brought down mud and rocks to the town. This is not a usual occurrence in Mexico, but does happen occasionally. It is usually the town of San Juan Cosala that has had landslides. The last incident happened more than 10 years ago, but there was another one about 25 years ago. In Raquet Club, for example, houses are built right up against steep mountains.
