What's it like to drive in Placencia, Belize?

You can drive your car easily on the one road we have on the peninsula of Placencia. We do not have the same number of golf carts that you can see in Ambergris Caye, but they are here. You want to be cognizant when driving of the golf carts, bicycle riders, pedestrians, and the occasional lizards the size of a cat or a dog that cross the streets. You will find iguanas crossing the streets, too.

It’s easy to drive in Placencia. There are two areas where you can make a right turn and two or three where you can make a left turn. The road is straight and evenly paved. It’s a gorgeous road that was built about 6 years ago. It has a lot of speed bumps because we love having that here in Belize. We don’t like people driving fast. I even think that we could add more speed bumps.

As a driver, you just have to remember that there are lots of people who take bicycles and there are lots of people who are walking on the streets so you have to be careful even at night. But often times, even if there are a lot of cars, you can go up to Maya Beach and further and you might not cross another car on the road. That still happens in Placencia.

Driving in Placencia is great. Three years ago, because of all the real estate projects, the government paved all the roads from Belize City to Placencia, which is about a three-hour drive. When you head a little further into Belmopan and San Ignacio, some of the roads are okay but they are not great because they are still dirt roads. Overall, driving in Placencia is great because of the paved roads.

There are police bumps throughout Placencia, which is very good because it stops one from driving crazy at high speeds and getting into an accident. From a safety point of view, the police bumps are a good thing.
However, I recommend that you be careful if you are driving at night when you are not familiar with the area. My suggestion is that you drive in the area during the day to get familiar with the area and then you can drive at night later. My recommendation doesn’t have to do with crime but it has to do with familiarity because there are times when you would not see the police bumps if you are driving at night and your car might hop a little. Drive carefully and drive smart. I would recommend the same if you were driving in the States.
