Are taxis readily available in Placencia, Belize, and what do taxis cost in Placencia, Belize?

There are a total of 12 taxis in the entire peninsula of Placencia. The fare Is actually pretty cheap. I don’t believe they have meter and you don’t need to haggle. The reason is that, even if you want to go to from the village to the top of the peninsula, you are only talking about a 12-mile drive. They may just charge you $20 Belizean (US $10) to go there and back.
You can also take a taxi to the mainland.

The cost to ride a taxi in Placencia depends on the distance that you will travel.
As an example, from the Placencia airstrip up to Placencia Village would cost you around US $3 per person. I don’t even know if anyone from the village takes a taxi because most of the time the taxis charge $3 per person and there should be a minimum of two people in the taxi. So it’s a minimum of $6 for a taxi ride to go from the...

Yes, taxis are available in Placencia. You won't have a very nice taxi. They're mostly just independent drivers that call themselves a taxi. There's no infrastructure for a taxi service like we would think of it in the US, but they are available.
There have been times where I have used a taxi to go up north because I was going maybe 8 to 9 miles to one of the restaurants up on the peninsula and I didn't want to go to on a golf cart for that distance.

The taxis here are pretty pricey actually, keeping in mind that the cost of the gasoline is about double what it is in the US. Obviously the cost depends on how far you're going, but it's hard to get away from going anywhere out of the village area further up the peninsula about 8 to 10 miles before you get to another restaurant and there are many really neat, little restaurants along the peninsula. That taxi ride there could cost you US $15 each way.
There are no meters in the taxi. Usually you just ask the driver how much is it going to cost before you leave so that you don't feel like they're just making up the number when they get to the destination.

(Settled by slaves who escaped to the hinterlands, a maroon community, Gales Point Malanti is a village within driving distance of Placencia where visitors come to see the West Indian manatees and refresh themselves at Gentle's Cool Spot bar, pictured.)
