How's the biking in and around Placencia, Belize?

Road biking is the second national sport in Belize after soccer so there is a really big biking scene here. Not a lot of people do it because good bikes are not really cheap. There’s not a lot of mountain biking because it has not really been developed and there is not a lot of people who would do it. The trails in the jungle get covered up pretty quickly with vegetation if you don’t maintain them. The peninsula is flat and the road is 16 miles long. It is a brand new paved...

It is a brand new paved road so it is great for biking. I bike there every morning before it gets too hot.
We have an International marathon in Placencia called the End of the World Marathon. It’s now on its 3rd year and it’s being held every December. They run up and down the whole peninsula from one end to the other. It is a very big event. We get a lot of people internationally and it gets bigger every year. Last year, we had some Kenyan runners who ran in the race.

Mostly the tourists go biking while Belizeans just walk. The expats generally go in a golf cart or if they have to go up the peninsula further north of the village, they'll just drive their car.
