What are the holidays of Placencia, Belize?
Frik De Meyere
There are a lot of holidays in Placencia, which they take seriously because Belize is about quality of life and family time; family issues are way more important than work. If you don’t like that you are not going to survive down here. I was actually making a holiday schedule here yesterday for my team. It’s a family-oriented quality of life.

We have Garifuna Settlement Day, we have Independence Day, and we have celebration days for whatever you can imagine. Christmas holiday starts the first week of December, so it is like a month off. They have lots of holidays, times off, etc. The focus of Belize is the quality of life.
Belize’s Independence Day is really big. There are parades all over the country. Garifuna Settlement Day is not celebrated everywhere, but in the Garifuna Villages ; that’s pretty fun. It is like going back to the African Garifuna tribe tradition. There is music, dancing and drumming (pictured).
Belize has events that are not even holidays. It doesn’t have to be a holiday; they create it. They have fishing events here. It’s not a holiday, but they don’t care, everybody goes out fishing. We have a music and arts festival. Easter is really big, too. The whole country goes to Placencia for Easter; I don’t know why. They just go to the beach and party. The whole village goes here. It’s crazy!

Belize has a lot of holidays. We have Garifuna Settlement Day, which is a festival that we celebrate to commemorate one of the groups in Belize. It is held in September. There’s dancing and there’s a feast. We learn about the Garifuna Settlement Day in school, but I haven’t been to one personally.

Our independence day is in September. We celebrate this day to mark the day when we gained independence from Great Britain. We have parades. Our national armed forces, which are called the BDF (Belize Defense Forces), wave the Belizean flag. There’s a big festival up in Memorial Park.

We have National Heroes Day on September 21st. On that day, we celebrate our national heroes and benefactors. We celebrate it for Philip Goldson and George Cable Price. George Cable Price was our first Prime Minister and he was one of those who helped fight for our independence. We also celebrate it for our benefactor Baron Bliss. He was a sailor who was very wealthy. He never came inland to Belize, but he visited our shores and he said that he liked the view from his ship. We have a national monument dedicated to him because he left a lot of money for Belize.
