What are the outdoor activities in and around Corozal?
David Berger - Tradewinds Hospitality at Orchid Bay
Corozal is right on the sea, so lots of people go swimming. Other outdoor activities in Corozal include fishing, sailing (which is a big thing in Corozal), hiking, and biking.

In Corozal, you’ll see people swim in the bay. Corozal doesn’t have a beach so people come up here to Orchid Bay just for swimming and water activities. In fact, Orchid Bay has the only beach in the north. In Corozal Town, people swim off the waterfront all the time. There are also slides and stuff where kids jump in the water.
There’s lots of fishing in Corozal. There’s river fishing right up the Progresso Lagoon, which is very close to here. There’s an ocean fishing spot where you can catch big barracudas, snook fish, permit, and tarpon. Also in the sea here in Corozal, there’s a spot close to Bacalar Chico where you can catch snapper. Bacalar Chico is an hour away by boat, and it’s where you can catch reef fish, grouper, lobster, and conch. There’s also Sarteneja, which is a huge fishing village 18 miles past Orchid Bay, where you can find all kinds of fish such as big barracudas, which locals like to get.
Corozal has a predominant wind, and since this bay is actually very shallow, we have a lot of flat days here with breeze, which is why we have good sailing conditions. People come to Corozal to sail, paddleboard and go kayaking. In Corozal, there’s a regatta in which sailing clubs participate. Corozal is perfect for sailing.
Kayaking is also very good here in Corozal. Since we have flat water, any flat-water sports work effectively here in Corozal. There are expats who live near Consejo and kayak here, but in town there’s not really anyone who’s set up to rent out kayaks yet. I’m sure someone will just set up shop one day where everyone can rent kayaks. Locals love to kayak, too. A lot of expats live north of town, so you’ll see more kayaking north of Corozal Town.
People bike everywhere in Corozal since it’s a very effective means of transportation because it’s a little congested in Corozal Town. For some people, it’s hard to find parking when they go shopping. I see a lot of expats biking in Corozal, and a lot of them have baskets on their bikes and just do their shopping like that.
In Corozal, people hike the St. Rita Ruins in Corozal Town and the Cerros Ruins out here. Belize is really flat in general, so people go hiking all the time. There are also tall pyramids that people climb.
