Is there diving, SCUBA or snorkeling in and around Corozal?

I’ve not done any snorkeling in Corozal itself. We have, however, stayed there for a couple of nights at a little island called Caye Caulker that’s just to the south of Ambergris Caye and very close to the mainland of Belize. We took a plane to Corozal from Belize City and then in Belize City we took a little puddle jumper over to Caye Caulker. Then, we went on a little boat tour that included snorkeling. It was absolutely phenomenal.

The SCUBA and snorkeling in Belize is fantastic. It’s one of the best places I’ve ever been (I’m PADI certified) and I’ve been in a lot of places. The reef is very close to the shoreline, you know, so you really don’t have that far to go to hit some great diving sites.

Regarding SCUBA and snorkeling specifically in Corozal, you could go but you’re not going to see much. The bay itself has kind of a sandy bottom. What you want to do is go out to the reef, which is not a bad boat ride away. We go out there fishing all the time and there’s a marine reserve out there named Bacalar Chico. You can go to Bacalar Chico. There are some really interesting Mayan ruins out there. Because it’s a reserve, you can’t fish in parts of it and you can do your diving. It’s all part of the same system as Ambergris Caye, which runs all the way the tip of Mexico down to San Pedro, which is a big tourist destination.

I would not recommend diving or snorkeling in Corozal. When you’ve got the world’s greatest diving venue just two hours away by boat (17-18 minutes if you fly), in front of Ambergris Caye along the reef, you don’t travel all the way down here in Corozal to take second best. You go to the best. Ambergris Caye is technically part of Corozal District, so you could say it’s close enough.

I have been scuba diving in Ambergris Caye, which is absolutely incredible. You get in the water, and you don’t even have to scuba; you can just snorkel down the reef. There are a couple of places that will take you close to Ambergris Caye, and you can take the boat ride over in the morning.
In Ambergris Caye, you can go snorkeling all morning, have a late lunch, and be back on the ferry going back to Corozal on the same day. You’ll be back in Corozal at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. It’s very simple to do and very inexpensive, and I personally don’t get all wound up about Ambergris Caye the way the young party kids out for spring break do, but I’ll go out there for the snorkeling or scuba.
