What's the food like in the markets in Corozal?

The food in the markets in Corozal is good and getting better. Everything’s fresh. In Belize it is government policy not use any GMO crops. They won’t allow them to be imported either. So, everything you get is fresh.

The beef is a little too fresh. They don’t age it long enough to make it nice and tender but refrigeration is at a premium. There is quite a bit of variety and with more and more gringos coming in I’m seeing Cheerios and all kinds of American brands on the aisles now. Where once the choice of foods in the markets in Corozal was much more limited, now, we’ve got a big fully air-conditioned supermarket that’s right on the square in Corozal, which is where I do most of my shopping. But a lot of little old markets there have good stuff as well.
The supermarket in the center of town is similar to a supermarket in a small town, sort of like a Piggly-Wiggly. It has everything you need and some things that you want but not everything you could possibly think of. The prices are very reasonable. I can buy a huge bag of all fresh produce for US $10 that will last a week.
