Can I buy furniture in Corozal?

Most of the furniture you can buy in Corozal is handmade, and made out of the local hardwood. All my cabinets are made out of mahogany. There’s also teak. There are all kinds of different woods in Corozal. And you can get about anything made that you’d like to have made. You’d have to probably go to some of the big stores in Belize City to get a really good mattress or something like that or just ship it in, but other than that, you can get anything you...

We had all the main furniture in our house handmade. Some of the furniture we did ship in from the States, such as the mattresses, but I had all the headboards made locally. The chairs and tables and all the kitchen furniture we had made locally. We have some patio furniture that we shipped in from the States because we had some other stuff coming anyway.
You can get just basic furniture made for you or you can contract with some really good craftsman who can make great furniture. For example, I saw a handmade mahogany bathtub that was just absolutely beautiful.
The price to have furniture made for you in Corozal is very reasonable. For example, if you’re going to buy that same table I had made here in Corozal in the US I bet you couldn’t touch it for less than a grand. In Corozal, it cost me about $300.

You certainly can buy furniture in Corozal, in numerous places. There are stores for custom furniture as well as stock.
At Cerros Sands, we also have a carpentry shop for custom furniture items.

To buy furniture in Corozal, you can just go down to the few Mennonite stores in Corozal and get the furniture that you need. The Mennonites make 99% of the furniture in Belize. It’s against the law to bring in wood into Belize, such as a dresser from the States.

The quality of the furniture in Corozal isn’t really good. The wood is pretty, but the quality and the craftsmanship are poor. You see the nail heads sticking out of the wood 90% of the time, they just throw varnish on it, it’s not really sanded down, and the edges are really rounded. It’s nothing like somebody in the States is used to. The wood is cheap compared to US standards. It would cost BZ $150 (US $75) for a table for 4, while wooden chairs cost about $35 Belize ($17.50) a piece.
We have a cheap table and a couple of wooden chairs in the kitchen, and a sofa and two upholstered chairs in the living room. I got them from a place in Corozal that I’m not sure imports them or makes them in Belize, but they’re of cheap quality. You sit in a chair and you put your hand on the arm of the chair, and you can feel the wood coming through the cushion. Everything is done here at a minimum just so everybody can have something. Few people have money to buy anything of high quality here, except for expats and a few Belizeans.
You can get good quality furniture in Corozal, but I just never had the chance to look into it because I treat myself like a local Belizean living here in this little village. I want to make my local Belizean friends who come over to my house feel comfortable, and not think I’m some rich guy. I show them that I just make ends meet like everybody else. I don’t have any expat friends other than Mark Leonard (who owns Cerros Sands) and George. George owns a property next to the one I own.
