Is it safe to drink the water in Corozal?

If you are a local here or you have been here for a long time your body can adapt to the parasites in the water. I can drink rainwater straight but we find that we don’t really want to give it to visitors that much because unless you adapt your body to the local water then you shouldn’t drink it.

We have a rainwater catchment system and we send our water through a filtration system with reverse osmosis, and then we drink the water without any problem. When I eat out or when I travel to another country, I request bottled water. People do not serve tap water here in Corozal at all; it’s all bottled water.
Personally, I am not concerned about ice cubes in the restaurants in Corozal because a lot of restaurants buy from an ice making company. When we buy vegetables, we just rinse them using our water that went through our filtration system and it’s not a problem. Vegetables here in Belize have not been treated with a lot of chemicals so a lot of times I don’t really concern myself with this issue. I am not concerned either when I eat lettuce at a restaurant. I haven’t heard of anybody catching any parasites or salmonella or anything like that here. That’s not to say that it doesn’t happen at all but I haven’t experienced it myself and I’ve been here for 11 years. We run a restaurant and we wash our fruits and vegetables using water from the tap and we haven’t experienced and health issues as a result.

Yes, it is safe to drink the water in Corozal. However, I don’t do it and most expats buy the 5-gallon jugs or drink bottled water. I haven’t done a test of the water here in Corozal but in Belize City I did a test of the water out of the tap and it was of fine quality. It was better than my Canadian tap water.

I have traveled quite a bit and I know that questionable water is one thing you want to stay away from as much as possible. You can drink it but I don’t and I think most expats don’t since a 5-gallon jug costs only $2 Belize (US $1). It is cheap and it is safer than drinking tap water.

The water in Corozal goes through reverse osmosis and is probably safe, but everybody in Corozal drinks bottled water just to be on the safe side. In Corozal, bottled water costs only BZ $2 (US $1) for 5 gallons. People use tap water only for bathing, brushing their teeth, or rinsing fruits and vegetables.
