What's the best way to get around in Cayo, Belize, including San Ignacio and Belmopan?

You can start your journey to Cayo, Belize by hopping on a Tropic Air flight that flies into Belmopan or the San Ignacio terminal - which is known locally as the Maya Flats Airstrip.
If you are looking to explore the downtown area of San Ignacio, you can walk pretty much everywhere, but if you want to venture further afield, a vehicle is recommended. There are also some very colorful taxi drivers, full of local lore, who make the journey from A to B interesting and...

The best way to get around in the Cayo District is to have your own vehicle. If you want to take the buses, you are welcome to do so but you are going to get tired of that soon.
If you live in the Cayo District, you would want to have a really economical vehicle – maybe a four-cylinder or maybe something that you could take off-road because sometimes you have to go on dirt roads. I see some people who drive very luxurious vehicles here in Belize and they don’t seem...

I see some people who drive very luxurious vehicles here in Belize and they don’t seem to have a problem with that. I have a SUV and my husband has a pick-up so if we need to move something, we use his vehicle, but if we are just going out to dinner or to an event, we go in my vehicle.
You can also have a motorbike or a bicycle. I have seen people riding bicycles to and from places, so it depends on how energetic you want to be.

The best way to get around in Cayo is by driving your car, but some of it depends on where you live. If you live right in San Ignacio, everything is within walking distance or you can just grab a taxi, which is quite affordable. If you live out of town, you definitely need a car.
We have a pickup truck and a little open jeep. If you have a Porsche or any car that is almost glued to the street, forget it in Cayo because there are lots of potholes here....
