For anything longer, they will advertise to let you know ahead of time. For example, they may be doing some upgrades and they will tell you that there will be a 3-hour blackout. Every now and then, the power might be off if there is a storm or if somebody had an accident and knocked down a power pole. It’s not a problem. It rarely happens.
Blackouts do not even happen every month. Brownouts do not happen a lot as long as your house is wired properly.

There are a few brownouts where the power goes out without you knowing but that doesn’t happen a lot. Some people here in Cayo do have generators but not many. If someone has a generator it’s because they are probably higher end or have other things to protect. I don't have a generator and none of my friends have generators. We did have some blackouts in the past, but it doesn’t happen a lot anymore.

If you have an extensive range of freezers you might consider having a backup generator but normally, if you are on the grid, the electricity is reliable. The blackouts do not last more than a couple of hours and only happen three or four times a year.

The length of the blackout depends on what happened. We had an incident recently where somebody knocked down a pole, which of course had to be replaced so the power was off for about 6 hours. Most of the time, however, blackouts are less than an hour.
The power company also does scheduled blackouts as well but they warn people prior to the event. They announce it on the radio and other news media including a text to my phone to let us know so we can be prepared.
Having a backup generator is not a necessity but we built the generator house and have provided an auto switch in our electrical plan and now all we need is the money to put the generator in. Depending on the size generator it can be quite expensive. Most Belizeans just make sure that they have everything they need and want so they can keep their refrigerators shut and then get Daddy to take them out to dinner!
