Are the doctors in Cayo, Belize, including San Ignacio and Belmopan good?

Yes, the doctors in the Cayo district are good. Most of the doctors in Belize are trained abroad, mainly in Guatemala and Cuba, and some in the US. In the Cayo District / San Ignacio, La Loma Luz Adventist Hospital offers services and treatment ranging from and including infectious diseases, internal medicine, labor/delivery, laboratory, pediatrics, radiography, surgery, and ultrasound.

Several other Cayo doctors hold private practice, as well as work at the Government Hospital in San Ignacio. Saint Gabriel Medical Center is an after-hours clinic located by the police station in San Ignacio. It is a private practice run by Dr. Godoy, a surgeon and his wife, an anesthesiologist. They treat drop-in and scheduled patients. Their facilities include a pharmacy, an OR, a lab, and a delivery room.
In Benque Viejo, Dr. Lesbia Cocom Guerra operates the Mount Carmel Clinic & Pharmacy, a private clinic, at the corner of Said Musa and H Street. They treat minor emergencies and outpatient services. The Mopan Clinic is a public clinic located on Riverside Street between Diaz and Guerra Streets in Benque Viejo. They treat small emergencies and offer family and community health services.

Yes, the doctors in the Cayo District are good. For the small things such as if I break my arm, I would go to the doctor and get it fixed. Generally, for something small, I would go to the doctors here in the Cayo District. But for anything major, I probably would not.
15 years ago, I went to the doctor because I had an issue and after the examination, he said, “Wilana, I think that you have cancer. I would not recommend you doing anything here. I would strongly...

15 years ago, I went to the doctor because I had an issue and after the examination, he said, “Wilana, I think that you have cancer. I would not recommend you doing anything here. I would strongly recommend you to go to Guatemala, Mexico, or to the US.” I opted to go to the US because I felt like I wouldn’t have to worry about what kind of care I would get here.
It did turn out to be cancer and I ended up getting all my treatments in the US. In between my treatments, I came back home and I was checked and monitored but the actual treatments were done in the US. I am cancer free now for 15 years. I am definitely blessed.
Here in Belize, I don’t have health insurance because the medical services here are so cheap it is not really necessary for one to have insurance coverage.

I had to see a doctor in Cayo twice but I feel more comfortable going to a doctor in Belize City. Belize City is a bigger metropolitan area and there are more private clinics over there that have better equipment.

Recently I had an issue where I couldn’t hear on one ear and so I went to a private clinic in Belize City. I had the appointment in just two days. I went and saw the doctor after waiting for only 20 minutes. He had some really good equipment. He used a tiny camera to check my ear and solved the problem in no time. I was really surprised about the state-of-the-art equipment that they had.
Belize City is about 75 miles away from where I live in Cayo. In case of an emergency, we can call an emergency unit called BERT, which stands for Belize Emergency Rescue Team, and get transferred from here to Belize City. They can also arrange a flight to the US if you have something very serious that they couldn’t handle in Belize City.
If I would need a hip replacement or something really serious, I would rather have it done in Austria. It’s not because of the equipment but because in Austria, they speak my native language. That is very important because you really want to understand what the doctor says. It is hard enough to be sick and communicate well in your native language so it is even harder in a foreign language.
You can also go to Merida in Mexico, which is a kind of healthcare capital, where they have a lot of medical tourism from the US. They have some excellent clinics over there. Merida is only about an hour’s flight via Tropic Air from Belize. You can also drive to Merida. This is important to know if you live in Belize and you have a serious medical condition.
