Are taxis readily available in Ambergris Caye, and what do taxis cost in Ambergris Caye?

There are taxis on Ambergris Caye and the mainland of Belize. The island of Ambergris Caye is very small, so no taxi ride on the island is ever going to cost you more than $5, unless you are going up north. It’s about $5 to go one way anywhere in the island, so it is very affordable. You can put up to six people in the cab.

In the mainland, I would highly recommend negotiating a price before you get into a taxi. (Picture of Belize City taxi plate.)That is something that, personally, I insist on because you just can't get into a taxi and say take me to X. Taxis do not have a standard meter like you do in the US. So you don't know what you are going to be paying to go to a certain destination sometimes. So sometimes, X turns into triple X.

Taxis are one of the mainstays of getting around on Ambergris Caye. It costs US $5 to get you from San Pedro (the main town on Ambergris Caye) to 5 minutes in either direction, or about a mile in either direction. The prices will go from $5 to $25 to get you 3 miles. You can find taxis anywhere at the airports. They are a relatively common form of transportation for everyone on the island.

If you want to go to some of the resorts, $25 would take you all the way up to about 3 miles north of the tip of the island, and there is also a toll fee to get across the island.
Taxis in Belize do not have meters, so you have to negotiate a deal with the driver first, but for the most part, I have never had the problem of someone trying to overcharge me. Personally, I have a consistent taxi driver, so once I am here, getting a taxi or negotiating fees is not a problem for me. Generally, just check with the driver ahead of time and ask how much it is to go to where you are going. They will typically tell you, but definitely ask first before you get to your destination.

The taxis are pretty readily available here in Ambergris Caye. Also, taxi drivers give out their number so you could easily call them and they are very nice and friendly.
My sister met a taxi driver when she was visiting from school and told the driver that she was new to Ambergris Caye. When he heard this, he gave my sister a little tour of San Pedro and then he took her to her hotel, which was very nice.

Taxis are very cheap here in Ambergris Caye that it only costs a few dollars to get from one place to another. You don’t have to haggle with them ahead of time since they are very fair, which is very nice.
