Is it safe to drink the water in Ambergris Caye?

Whether it is safe to drink the water in Belize depends where in the country you are. Most tourist/ex-pat communities do have a filtered water system, but you have to confirm that with the specific area you are traveling to.
Ambergris Caye, the main tourist/expat destination in Belize, does have a water plant on the island, which filters the water. However, if you do have a sensitive stomach and are not used to different minerals in your water,...

You can drink the water right from the tap here in Ambergris Caye. It is heavily chlorinated, but it is still potable, so you can make ice cubes, wash lettuce, and you can brush your teeth without worry. The water here is not like it is in Mexico where you absolutely have to worry about the quality of the water. Down here in Belize, you can wash a tomato int he sink as you normally do and eat it. It is great that way.

A lot people drink the water in Ambergris Caye but I choose not to, even though I think there is nothing wrong with the city water. The issue that I have been told is that there were breaks in the pipes and you get backwash and things of that nature, so I drink bottled water.
The bottled water here in Ambergris Caye is simply city water that has been run through ultraviolet and reverse osmosis treatment. A lot of the resorts, especially far out of town where city water is not...

I drink bottled water and I make coffee with bottled water but I use city water for making pasta. From a cooking standpoint and for brushing my teeth, I still use city water from the taps.
