Is the electricity reliable in Ambergris Caye? Are there blackouts or brownouts in Ambergris Caye?

Power outages in Ambergris Caye do not happen very often, probably once a month on average. We probably get it two or three times a month in the stormy season, which is August, September and October. The power outages can last for about a full hour. Some days they shut the power for about six hours, but this type of thing doesn’t happen really that often. Power outages are bothersome and just moderately annoying.

Electricity in Ambergris Caye is pretty much reliable, but it won’t hurt for an expat coming to live here to bring a generator with them just for emergency purposes.
Some people have certain illnesses and certain medications that need to be refrigerated, so it is best to have a generator in case of black outs.

I have been here for 12 years. In the past, Ambergris Caye and some of the other areas in the country used to have far more brown outs.
The supply of electricity in Ambergris Caye is pretty solid now. They run the power lines straight from Mexico, through the water, to the island. We get power outages if there is a storm or if something happens, but the brownouts have pretty much been eradicated. They will tell you if they are going to shut the power...

They will tell you if they are going to shut the power down for a period of time and they let everyone know why they have to do it.
I am not saying that brownouts do not happen in Ambergris Caye any more, but it happens with far less frequency than it had before. In the last couple of months, we might have had two unplanned brownouts, one of which I think happened because someone hit a power pole and the other one was because there was a storm. Typically, the brownouts are on the down slope from a frequency perspective.

Electricity in Ambergris Caye is perfect. It’s been a long time since we had a blackout here. The only time that we get problems with electricity is when they are trying to put more electricity up north as to meet the demand here.
The last time we had a blackout, we spent two hours without electricity. After that, everything went back to normal. That was about 3 months ago.
