Are there American-trained doctors in Ambergris Caye?

There are American-trained doctors and dentists in Ambergris Caye.  However, to practice here, a foreigner must undergo additional training to make sure that they are in line with the Belizean medical system as well.  In addition, Belize very much looks after its residents to make sure that they get the jobs first.

There is a new American doctor in Ambergris Caye who is taking over a Cuban doctor’s clinic. I have not met her yet, but they have been writing in the paper about her and she seems to be a quite neat young lady. I am hoping that it all works out for her.

For example, my chiropractor on the island is from America. It is, however, more common to see a Canadian doctor than a US doctor based in Ambergris Caye.

Typically, you are going to find Central American schooled doctors – Belize doctors who trained in the States and came back. So there are some American-trained doctors here. My dentist is from Cuba and my private doctor is also from Cuba, so it is just that I just ran into more Cuban doctors than American doctors.

There is a doctor here in Ambergris Caye who was initially certified in the US and then he was certified here in Belize in order to be able to practice here. We also have an American dentist in Ambergris Caye, who does practice here.

We have a number of Belizean and Cuban doctors in Ambergris Caye, who are very competent and whom I have used the 15 years that I have been here. If you need a brain surgery, for example, or an open-heart surgery, or a lung transplant, you might want to go some place else. If you have a need for stitches or if you have a cold or if you have some lingering issues then seeing a doctor here in Ambergris Caye is okay.
 
The equipment here in Ambergris Caye is much that it used to be. We now have x-rays. They are able to do a number of different procedures here and we also have flights every hour, on the hour, going to Belize City, where Medical Associates and a couple of other private medical facilities are available to us.
