Ambergris Caye has very unpredictable weather. We have a sub-tropical climate, which means that the weather can be very beautiful at one point of the day and then all of a sudden, a cloud will come and it pours. Then the cloud will go away and it will be beautiful again. That is the kind of weather that we have. Rainy season officially starts with hurricane season, which is from June 1st to December 1st. In January this year, when the US was having cold fronts with a lot of snow, Belize got a little tip of that weather. We got a cool air coming in. The lowest would be about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The average weather in Ambergris Caye is around 80 degrees, so going down to 60 degrees is a little cold for us. It also still rains a little, but we still get beautiful weather during the day.

In 2014, it rained in more in October than I have ever seen it rain on the island before. You will typically see rain from June to November. That will be consistent rain, but it is not a down pouring, constant rain. You are just going to have rain more frequently from June to November.
You will see some type of rain on a daily basis here in Ambergris Caye. There would be days without rain and there will be a few days in a row with rain. I would not say that it is tremendously consistent. It is not like the afternoon shower every day from June to November. You will just see a propensity to have more rain from June to November.
Typically in 2009 and 2010, the rain would typically stop after November and you would be waiting for it to rain again. In the last couple of years, it has rained quite a bit further and longer into December and January. In 2014, the rain stopped in January and typically it stops in November. We still saw a couple of showers in January, but then it begins to dry out. You may get rainfall a couple of times a month or you may not get any rainfall at all.
The rain doesn’t affect your day at all. You just have to be prepared. If you are out running errands you are going to catch potentially a bit of rain at some point throughout the day. You might have strong rains for a couple of days so people would be in their golf carts as opposed to walking or they would spend less time on the water.

However, the town of San Pedro (the only town on Ambergris Caye) is getting better at spraying.We get some pretty intense rainstorms sometimes. However, the town of San Pedro (the only town on Ambergris Caye) is getting better at spraying.We get some pretty intense rainstorms sometimes. The rain here falls a lot harder than it ever did in Canada. We don’t get days and days of rain where we cannot go out. We are on the island so the rain blows over pretty quickly. I have been on my boat when you could see the rain coming, so you could go a mile north or a mile south in order to avoid the rain. There are times when we could get a hurricane or something similar that would cause us to have the clouds over us for days that brings lots of rain.

A typical day during the rainy season has rain starting at around 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and by 6 it’s over. There may be more rain at night, or we can get more rain in the morning. It’s variable.
