Are there rivers, lakes and waterfalls in or around Ambergris Caye?

There are no rivers, lakes or waterfalls in Ambergris Caye but just outside the financial center that we are in in San Pedro (the main town on Ambergris Caye) I can stand on street and look left to see the lagoon and look to the right and see the ocean. Either one is less than a 3-minute walk to get to. That is how narrow the island of Ambergris Caye is. It is 25 miles long and a mile wide at its widest point and where we live in the San Pedro area is not at the island’s widest...

If you want to see rivers, lakes or waterfalls, you can go to the jungle. You can either hop on to a 12-minutes puddle jumper to the mainland and pick up with a tour guide there, or you can arrange a tour and an excursion here. I heard that the trip to the Lamanai, which takes you all the way up the rivers, with little monkeys jumping on the boat. And if you take it all the way up the river, you can go and visit the Lamanai Mayan ruins (pictured). It is supposed to be one of the best trips that they do through the jungle and the rivers.
There is plenty of cave tubing and horse riding, which you can do in a day and then come back home, or there are some nice little cabanas that you can spend the weekend in. I have not done it yet, which is a shame, but that is only because I work very hard and I am a parent of a teenage daughter. We have lots of commitments here in Ambergris Caye and I have a full life here. I have not branched out and I really must.

Ambergris Caye doesn’t really have any rivers, lakes, or waterfalls. Ambergris Caye is an island so you won’t find that type of geological structure here. You have to head into the mainland to see that. Out here, you are going to see reefs, cayes, caves, and coves. You will not find a waterfall, or a stream, or a river on Ambergris Caye.

Out here, we have great underwater structures. That is why Ambergris Caye is one of the greatest diving places in the world. We have some very interesting structures right here along the reefs and all through the islands. There are hundreds of islands spread throughout Belize and many small islands are right around here on Ambergris Caye.
If you want to see rivers, lakes, and waterfalls, you can go to the mainland. There are direct flights to the mainland and there are water taxis to the mainland as well. Right now Tropic Air has expanded quite a bit. You can fly from the island directly out to San Ignacio, which is where you will find the majority of the waterfalls. You can fly down to Placencia on Maya Air or Tropic Air. Down there the mountains go almost completely to the ocean and you will find waterfalls and rivers there.
Once you get to the mainland, the geology changes quickly. It is very flat from Northern Belize down to the middle of the country. On the west, the mountains start to rise on the western horizon, then they creep up closer to the water going to the south. After a quick flight to the mainland, you could be on a river in 15 minutes. If you take a boat, it will take about an hour to an hour and a half.

Ambergris Caye is a very low-level landmass so there are no rivers, lakes, or waterfalls here. Ambergris Caye is essentially a sandbar hanging down the southern end of Mexico, so our elevation is maybe 6 feet above sea level. We do have a wonderful ocean and a wonderful lagoon. We are completely surrounded by water so if the water is something you are looking for, you don’t have to travel very far to get to it.

If you want to see rivers, lakes, or waterfalls, there are a number of ways to get to the mainland, which has a plethora of waterfalls. You can easily take a short 15-minute flight from Ambergris Caye to Belize City or you can take a ferry from Ambergris Caye to the mainland, which takes an hour and half. From the mainland, you can drive to a number of different rivers, lakes, and waterfalls.
Rio on Pools is a wonderful attraction. It is a brown rock that almost looks like granite but it creates a waterfall system and every few feet, there are different levels and they create these very smooth pools filled with water. You can walk across the rocks and dip into the pool and again, walk across the rocks and see a little waterfall. It’s a very large system. There is also a 1,000-foot waterfall located on the mainland. Lakes and other different types of geological scenery are present in the mainland as well.
