When I move to Belize, should I use a regular phone line, a cell phone, Skype, Magicjack, or something else?

Both Skype and Magic Jack work here in Belize. Cell phone works, too.
We have good cell phone service in Belize. I call back and forth between the US and Belize on my cell phone all the time. I have a cellphone account in the US with a sim card and I have a cell phone account in Belize with a sim card. I just change sim cards depending on which country I am in at the moment.

When you live in Belize full time, it is better to just get a cell phone. I would not bother getting a landline. For a local cell phone, a basic service is US $20 to $25 a month. Have a computer with Skype and then you can make calls to the States and that would be relatively cheap (if you’re calling a phone number) or free altogether (if you’re calling another Skype account).

If you’re running a business in Belize, opt for landline phone service. If not, stick with the apps that are either free or cost-efficient.
There are a handful of programs including Skype, Google Voice, WhatsApp, MagicJack, and other resources that make communicating with those back at home painless and inexpensive! These programs work on computers or Smart devices that are connected to Wi-Fi.

If you plan to stay around for some time, try a pre-paid cellphone or Belize SIM Card. They are relatively inexpensive (cost about USD$30) and will provide you with a means of local contact in Belize.

If you move to Belize and need to stay connected, I would recommend using a smart phone and use the voice over Internet phone services like Skype, Viber, etc.
You can get a phone here in Belize and put a SIM card in it and you are good to go. You should not get a phone that is tied to providers like Verizon or AT&T because then you are going to end paying international rates and roaming charges. So if you are going to Belize and you already have a smartphone, make sure it...

You should not get a phone that is tied to providers like Verizon or AT&T because then you are going to end paying international rates and roaming charges. So if you are going to Belize and you already have a smartphone, make sure it is an unlocked phone. If you have a smartphone and it is locked with a certain provider, you have to get it unlocked so you can buy a local SIM card here in Belize. So in Belize you buy a phone, buy a SIM card, and then you pay as you go.
You can also stay connected through your phone via Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi hotspots in Belize are generally provided by restaurants and hotels. You don’t necessarily need a data plan in order to get on the internet. You can use your SIM card for local calls and connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot if you want to use the internet.

What the best communication tool depends on where you are be located in Belize. If you are in a remote area, you might want to go with Dish and find out what system works the best, whether it is Skype, Vonage, etc. If you are in town, you have many more options for internet service providers. And pretty much, because we have VOIP in Belize, then you could use all these apps to call for free to Canada, the US, and other countries. As long as your family and friends have Skype,...

And pretty much, because we have VOIP in Belize, then you could use all these apps to call for free to Canada, the US, and other countries. As long as your family and friends have Skype, Viber, or Whatsapp, then you could make phone calls or video calls for free, over the Internet.
If you are in business, you would want to use a cellphone or a landline. If you have a home in town, then you could have a landline as well. A landline helps you because you will have a home phone number and that also allows you to have a DSL line. In some cases, when you are in town and you don’t want to have a landline, but you need the internet, you will still end up getting the landline because that is how you will get your internet connection. If you are using DSL, then by all means you will have a physical line installed at your house.
Over the years, communications in Belize has gotten better because before, we only had one internet provider in the towns, which is BTL. Now, we have Smart Company, and we have MyFi, which is basically a portable Wi-Fi hotspot device just like Verizon has in the US. You can connect up to five devices to it. It is wireless and you just need to plug it in so it is charged. Once it is fully charged, you can put it in your pocket and walk with it. It holds a charge up to 3 hours. You can purchase a MyFi and take it wherever you go. MyFi works anywhere as long as you have cellphone reception because it uses the same signal as the cellphone signal. MyFi can be postpaid or prepaid. You can be in your car or you can go to the beach and have Wi-Fi. As long as you have cellphone reception, with MyFi, you will have internet.
