What are the sports and games in and around Belize?

Soccer is very popular in Belize and there are a lot of men’s recreational leagues. As far as the other sports go, darts is also popular. There is certainly some basketball here, but I am not certainly up to speed on it. I know that we have a basketball team.

You would go to the high school gym if you want to go see basketball, and you could go to the local field here if you want to see the men’s recreational soccer league.  We do not have a stadium or anything like that, but you certainly would have access to a live game.

The main sport that is played in this talented country of Belize is football, known in Canada and the United States as soccer. The team that is well known to everyone is the national team of Belize, the Jaguars, that recently moved up in FIFA ranking based on their performance this year.

 

Basketball is the next famous sport known countrywide due to the newly executed league that successfully started about two years back. Its known as the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL). Its games are broadcasted over the country's main television channel at night on weekends.

 

Volleyball is a sport that is well known and played on beaches and indoor courts as well as outside. If you're driving in the southern area you will see the nets are set up in the yard and if you're lucky enough you will see the children playing in the evenings. There are some tournaments that occur annually. Belize also produces a national team in this category to play against foreign countries.

 

Cricket is a well-played sports in most of the villages as a cultural sport from all our surrounding Caribbean countries and is played most frequently in the Burrell Boom area. On occasions they would air some of the games on radio or television.

 

Next  up is pool. Pool is played all over the country and has been recently an uproar due to the Belikin 8-Ball Tournament that is taking over the country striving to find the best team. On occasions they would air the games on television or radio.

 

There are two other annually played sports in Belize that is very famous. The first is cycling (cross country cycling; male and female) and the second is canoeing (La Ruta Maya).

 

Boxing, table tennis, darts, golf and dominoes are other sports and games that are rising in this developing country and is mostly played in Belize city, although you see small groups of men gathering in a village for a game of dominoes.

We don’t have baseball, but we do have softball. So instead of throwing the ball overhand they throw it underhand. Softball is popular in some villages like football, where they have a national team and every district is represented.

Basketball is very popular in Belize, especially in the city (Belize City). Belize has a national basketball team as well. We also have some water sports like parasailing, water skiing, and snorkeling, which is most popularly done around the Barrier Reef.
