Fishing in Belize is awesome, especially if you have a boat. You can catch a lot of fish in just one day and have plenty to feed a family of 50. Fishing has also converted itself into a sport, where the most fish and the most extraordinary fish would let you win a competition. Fishing is a must do while here in Belize.
PS Do not forget your sunscreen, as our sun does tend to get extra hot.

There is some really good fishing you can do in the New River in Belize. For example tarpons, catfish and tilapia can all be caught in this fresh water river.

Definitely! There’s lot of good fishing in Belize. The direction we're going for fishing is to promote catch and release fishing. Whether you fish on the ocean, lake, or river depends on what kind of fish you want to catch. The most popular species are the tarpon, the permit and the bonefish, which, together, is considered our “grand slam”. To catch all these three kinds of fish in one fishing trip is the ultimate goal. Then there's deep-sea fishing, which is...Definitely! There’s lot of good fishing in Belize. The direction we're going for fishing is to promote catch and release fishing. Whether you fish on the ocean, lake, or river depends on what kind of fish you want to catch. The most popular species are the tarpon, the permit and the bonefish, which, together, is considered our “grand slam”. To catch all these three kinds of fish in one fishing trip is the ultimate goal. Then there's deep-sea fishing, which is done in the Caribbean Sea. You can also do tarpon fishing in the rivers. We have creeks, too. Fishing here in Belize is very diverse. If you want to catch bonefish, specifically, you would have to get in a boat from the mainland and take it out past the barrier reef to some of the cayes and then when you get to the cayes, they have mangroves that you can walk around. You just walk around in those areas and do your fishing.
You can do grand slam fishing at the Turneffe Atoll, which is the most popular area to do that kind of fishing. My family owns a beautiful property out there. I go there from time to time. It's gorgeous.
An atoll is a ring shaped reef island or island shape formed by coral. The famous Blue Hole you may have seen in pictures is a good example.

There is good commercial fishing in Belize, but we have a lot of protected areas where you cannot fish.As for commercial fishing, we have lots of fish in Belize and we export these to other different countries. We also export shrimp.
There’s a lot of sport fishing in the ocean, rivers and lakes (pictured right) as well.

There is excellent fishing in Belize. I don’t do a lot of fishing and I wish I had more time to go out and do some fishing myself. In general, Belize has good fishing. We have fly-fishing, reef fishing, a little bit of river fishing, and deep-sea fishing. (Describing the big one that got away on the barrier reef of Belize, pictured.)
