How’s the kayaking in Belize and the rafting in Belize?
Giancarlo Vega
Kayaking is done a lot here in Belize either just for recreation or for fishing. However it is done, kayaking is a fun experience.
As far as rafting is concerned, we do not have a lot of rafting places, because our rivers are not rough enough for rafting to be known here. However, if you get up to the Maya Mountains in the Chiqibul area you can find good rafting locations.

There is no longer any rafting in Belize. I used to run a lot of white water trips here, but they have since put a dam on the river, so there’s no more rafting, unfortunately.
There is, however, river kayaking, but is not on the rapids. Going river kayaking in Belize is like a float trip on the river. Belize has an annual river race, which is called La Ruta Maya. It is a pretty big deal, as the contestants paddle about 30 miles from the border of Guatemala to...

There is also sea kayaking, which is extremely popular here in Belize. There is lots of kayaking done from Ambergris Caye. People paddle to Caye Caulker and back. They also have an annual eco-challenge race where they kayak all around the island. The majority of kayakers paddle up to the reef and then snorkel.

Both kayaking and rafting are very popular activities in Belize. In the western part of Belize, you can go kayaking, which is a really fun experience. There's canoeing as well, which is popular. Canoeing is definitely one of the most popular activities at our property at the Hill Bank Field Station, which is located on the Rio Bravo. There's a lagoon that borders the Hill Bank Field Station.

In Belize, you can go kayaking on the river and in the ocean as well. It just really depends your preference and where you're staying but you can definitely go for hours and hours kayaking in Belize. Kayaking is one of the most popular activities there.
There are a couple resorts in San Pedro (on Ambergris Caye) that offer kayaking. And the resorts that are located out in the other atolls such as Glover's Reef offer kayaking as well. These are all within the barrier reef. Kayaking is not recommended outside the barrier reef because it gets too deep and it is much calmer inside the barrier reef.
There are a lot of mangrove areas where you can go canoeing or kayaking around Belize, too. Belize is a kayaker’s paradise.

We do not offer a lot of rafting in Central Belize but you can go rafting in Southern Belize, where they have a lot of white water rafting.
Kayaking is a little bit more popular than rafting here in Central Belize, in the Cayo District. You can go kayaking on the Mopan River. It is a beautiful river up in Western Belize. The Mopan River originates from the highlands of Guatemala, so that area is excellent for kayaking.

Kayaking in Belize is excellent because we have lots of flat, slow-moving rivers. You can also go kayaking on the lagoons or the sea, which are two of the most common places chosen by tourists to go kayaking. You can also go kayaking around the cayes (islands).
There are some places that have regulations when it comes to water activities. For example, in Placencia, there are certain areas where you cannot go kayaking on the sea but you can do it in the rest of the peninsula. Most people like to kayak on the cayes because there are no regulations.
In general, kayaking on the sea is very safe. We have not heard of any shark attacks or anything like that here in Belize. Because Belize has the Barrier Reef, the sea is very flat and very calm, which makes for a great kayaking experience. When the waves are rough, the waves won’t be over two feet high, so big waves is not really a big concern here in Belize.
