Are there tax advantages or disadvantages if I retire or work in Belize?

There is no capital gains tax in Belize, no inheritance tax, no wealth tax, and the property tax is virtually zero.
 
However, if you are an American citizen or taxpayer, you still have to pay US taxes, irrespective of where your money is earned, any place in the world.

From a Canadian standpoint, one advantage of working and retiring in Belize is that you pay fewer taxes. I was in a 48% file in Canada and it was painful. Here in Belize, I am paying half. If you're a Canadian and you move to Belize, and you earn the same amount of money you earned in Canada, you're going to pay way less income taxes in Belize if you have to declare Canadian non-residency.

Other than income taxes, Belize has the 12.5% GST tax (General Sales Tax). There is also a hotel tax of 9%. Business tax is 1.75%. So there are certainly taxes in Belize, but nothing out of the ordinary that you wouldn't expect coming from a place like Canada.
