How are the restaurants in Belize?

The restaurants in Belize are the best you can find. I have lived in Costa Rica and in other places as well, and if I compare their restaurants to the restaurants here in Belize, so far, I have found the best are here in Belize.

One popular restaurant here in Placencia is Maya Beach Bistro, Hotel and Restaurant.

The restaurants in Belize are great, fantastic. There is a lot of delicious food especially here in Ambergris Caye. Off the top of my head, I would say there is probably 50 restaurants on this island of only 27 miles. And these are substantial restaurants. I am not talking about the cantinas or the little ones where you can get taquitos or anything like that. These are proper restaurants that serve sit down plated meals with excellent service. Off the top of my head, I would say there is probably 50 restaurants on this island of only 27 miles. And these are substantial restaurants. I am not talking about the cantinas or the little ones where you can get taquitos or anything like that. These are proper restaurants that serve sit down plated meals with excellent service. Every hotel has some form or ability to access food. Our neighboring islands are keeping up; they have at least 25 restaurants that I can think of. Throughout the country of Belize, wherever there are people, you will find restaurants.
The restaurants in Belize are either seafood oriented or North American based. There are no food chains here. You will not find Applebee’s or Olive Garden. It is very North American oriented. You would find a lot of grilled fish. You can also get fried fish, you can have lobster, shrimp, pasta dishes, hamburgers, etc. There is a lot of Mexican influence. Burritos, quesadillas, nachos and empanadas are very common foods in Belize. The northern part of Belize where I am gets a lot of Mexican influence on our food because we are so close to Mexico.
When you go to the southern part of Belize, there is not nearly the same kind of Mexican influence; it is much more of the West African slave influence. The Garifuna people influence the food in the south, so they like eating cassava. They also use a lot more of the ground provisions, like potatoes, white rice and beans, stew beans and chicken. Food in restaurants in the southern part of Belize is very traditional.

Belize has a variety of fantastic restaurants in each of it's six districts; from Corozal in the north to Toledo in the south and from Amegris Caye to San Ignacio in Cayo, one can find fantastic dining experiences. In San Pedrotown, on Ambergris Caye in the Belize District, one of my favorite restaurants is Blue Water Grill.

Although it's a bit on the pricey side, the food and service are fantastic. Located in the heart of the town, looking out over the Caribbean Sea, with the sounds of waves crashing on the reef, you are sure to have an amazing dining experience. Imagine yourself having the view from this table for a light lunch or a sushi dinner. Dine here yourself, I'm quite sure you will recommend it to a friend!

Elvi's Kitchen is one of the long-standing favorite restaurants in San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye. It boasts Mayan spices on fish and chicken baked in a banana leaf.
At food stands along the streets, they sell peeled and cut fresh fruit like Mangos and Watermelon in this photo! The flavors are on steroids compared to what you taste from these fruits in the USA. Yum!
Tutti Fruitti true European gelato in Placencia, Belize.
Here is a bowl of fresh, tangy Conch Ceviche cooked in lime juice with onions, peppers, carrots and tomatoes. We caught the conch while on a Sirena Azul Sail and Snorkel trip and had this tasty treat with tortilla chips for a snack!
Belize Cacao (Chocolate) Pod. The beans inside are surrounded by a sweet coating that is wonderful to taste. The sugar on the beans helps in the fermentation process.

The restaurants in Belize are wonderful and inexpensive. Often times, I go into a restaurant and I don’t even look at the menu. I’ll just tell the lady, “Fix me something that you’d have for dinner at your house. What’s the closest thing that you have to Belizean cuisine?” What I get is always wonderful.

My favorite restaurant in Orange Walk is Cocina Sabor. It has a great menu, with soup, fish dishes, and beef dishes. The owner is onsite- a great guy Oscar Gutierrez. Oscar’s a fantastic fellow. Love it! Trade Winds at Orchid Bay is another great place. There are several places right around Corozal: Patty’s Bistro, Perozo Blues, New Millennium, Bucket Ear. I’ve never, ever, ever had a bad meal anywhere is Belize ever. And I love to eat.
Here’s a true story. We stopped at a little place in Corozal called Bucket Ear and the lady who operated it was happy to see us. We were just stopping in for a beer and a snack. We asked her what was going to be on the menu the next day. She told us that her son would be bringing in some fresh hogfish, which I’ve never had. Asked one of my buddies about it and he said, “Yes, I spent a lot of time in Georgetown, South Carolina. We had hogfish a few times, but rarely because it’s so expensive.”
We went the next day, had a great meal, and I think it was like $14 Belize which is $7 US. And it was just wonderful.

Wow! Each district in Belize has a couple restaurants that stand out.
If you are in Belize City - The Stone Grill at the Radisson. San Ignacio - The San Ignacio Hotel. Placencia - Turtle Inn. Ambergris by far has the most. Corozal, Tony's Inn and Francesca's.

In general, if you go to a restaurant in Belize, you are going to eat as soon as the chef is done preparing your food. Sometimes there is a lack of speed and efficiency but you are going to get healthy, fresh foods. Often, there is an option of fish, beans, and rice, but overall, it’s a good diet
You will also find international cuisine in Belize. There are many people who have started businesses here and brought in new tastes, which also influenced some of the local...

I wouldn’t say food is a particularly amazing in Belize. It is less spicy than Mexican food. In general, food in Belize is not as interesting as other cuisines in the world but it will sustain you.

The restaurants are fantastic. Everything is so fresh - fruits, vegetables, seafood. Fish tacos and jerk chicken are 2 of my staples, and also chicken burritos are hard to pass up. Some of the best ceviche I ever had was at the Radisson Fort George in Belize City. They serve it with tortilla chips and it's an entire meal. But I have also had amazing pasta at The Smoky Mermaid right across the street.
