Can I buy good clothes in Belize?

That’s a million dollar question! Yes you can buy good clothes in Belize, but most of our clothes here actually come from either Guatemala or Mexico. We have a lot of American brands here like Fila, Adidas, Nike, etc., but they are very expensive compared to how much you pay for them in the US. We have a lot of American brands here like Fila, Adidas, Nike, etc., but they are very expensive compared to how much you pay for them in the US. When I was in the US about three weeks ago, I bought a pair of Nike shoes for about US $50 and when I came back to Belize, I found the same pair of Nikes, but it was about $200.  You might find a place that might have Nike for $100, but in places that people tend to go, it’s pricier than what you would pay in the US.
 
You can also go to Corozal (a town in Belize on the border with Mexico) but I don’t think they have any of the big stores like Walmart . So in Corozal, you might be buying Mexican products. Corozal has a Corozal Free Zone where you can buy goods at a very low price. Here in Placencia, Belize, you will pay $100 for a bottle of Jack Daniels but in the Corozal Free Zone, you will pay $25. The reason for the much lower price at Corozal at is because there are no import taxes, no transportation cost and they buy their larger quantity of items it by the boatload.

Yes, there are plenty of boutiques in Belize that sell quality clothing, but they do so at a very high price.  As an alternative for shopping in Belize, I recommend that you buy online and have the goods shipped to Belize.

If you need extra large sizes, you would so what we do, which is to make a monthly trip across the border to Mexico, since we’re here in Corozal, which is right on the border.  My shoe size is a 10, and there’s no way in Belize I could find a size 10 women shoe here. So, I either bring it from the States or bring it from Mexico or...

Even though you can find clothes, what most of the people do in Belize is have a tailor here make your clothes specifically for you, made to your size, and it’s very, very inexpensive. I actually make my own shorts and some shirts here. I could find materials very inexpensively. You can find, for example, Scotchgard material in the States for about US $20 a yard, I can buy it here for $5 a yard. It’s a big difference in prices and so you tend to have that tailor made clothes here instead of actually going out and buying.
 
There is a lot of export/import here in Belize where they import clothes from the US and so you’ll see stores here called American quality clothing.  When you buy there, you would pay maybe a little bit more than in the States to find some good quality clothing, but you can find these stores in every district in Belize.
