Are there good vets in Belize?

There are good veterinarians in Belize. There is not only good vet care for your animals but there are boarding opportunities too. I was back in Canada for two weeks for my vacation so I set my dog up at Pampered Paws. They took care of him for two weeks and I came home to a happy, healthy dog. Definitely pet care exists in Belize.
 
There are also free a clinic for people who can’t afford to pay for pet care. They have spay and neutering and they treat for basic things...

There are good veterinarians in Belize. There is not only good vet care for your animals but there are boarding opportunities too. There are also free a clinic for people who can’t afford to pay for pet care. They have spay and neutering and they treat for basic things such as fever and flea infestation. There is also a private veterinarian.
 
On the mainland, there are quite a few vets, too. There are veterinarians in Belize City and other main areas. My dog had an incident a year ago with a pit bull. The pit bull tried to attack him and it was right over the Christmas holiday, so the vets here were not in operation, which was very unfortunate. I had to fly my dog and myself to Belize City. I chartered a plane, put us on it, and when I got to the city, the vet took excellent care of him, stitched him back together, and sent us home. That was an expensive day, but that is my four-legged child, so I had to do it.
 
Sadly Belize has stray dogs, too. Unfortunately, that is just part of Third World life. However, Belize has a pound. Because of the generous donations of the animal lovers out there, they’ll take in the animals and they will try to foster them and care for them in the meantime. We have that kind of civilized mentality around animals here and in Belize especially in San Pedro the main town on Ambergris Caye. Throughout the country of Belize, there is a Humane Society effort in which we get a lot of volunteer veterinarians that come through, who come down to have a spay and neuter campaign. The kids go home and they bring their puppies back with a proper leash and some flea medication. Sometimes you will come across a dog with a clothesline wire as a collar. The dog grows, the collar doesn’t, and he collar grows into the dog etc. So some of it is education, some of it is resources but a lot of it is just good will.

I would say that about 80% of the people that live in our subdivision (Consejo Shores, in Corozal) have more than one pet and the veterinaries here are very good. As a matter of fact, we have a licensed vet that lives on property here.

Much like medical care for humans, vet care in Belize is pretty unbelievably inexpensive. We are fortunate enough to have developed a very good relationship with our vet. Our adopted cats, (and two dogs as well, both "natives") came from her clinic. She's gone the extra mile in some situations. Stuff that would never happen up north.

While big time stuff like hip replacements and organ transplants is beyond reach in Belize, basic, and general care is beyond acceptable. You don't get the what I call "the fleecing of the lambs" care you get up north. I always felt there they preyed to a degree on your love for your pets, running unnecessary tests, overcharging, well, just flat taking advantage. We had an older cat (well 5 to be exact, all since passed) we brought to Belize. She had several issues we'd spent THOUSANDS on in the states without resolution. We got better answers, and solutions here than we ever got there, and most of it was homeopathic in nature. Diet changes, etc. When it came her time, we got help on a Sunday evening that didn't require going to an emergency vet clinic. Small town stuff long lost up north. Our vet here won't de-claw cats. And good for her. We'd done it routinely in the States. We've adjusted. And glad for it. A little scratching. We can deal with it.

To give you an example, we had a vet visit our home here in Corozal and take care of all the dogs. One was a little bit sick so he had to give him a shot right away and the vet had all the medicines with him.  The charge was only BZ $80 (US $40) to get my pets taken care of, looked at, and they weren’t afraid.  In the US, when you take them to the vet they know they’re going, so they are afraid and anxious, but here in Belize, the vet comes here and it’s like he’s part of the family.  The dogs don’t get all scared and freaked out so it’s very different feeling. We really enjoy this better than in the States with our pets because we consider our pets our kids. We really take care of them.
