Everyone is moving to the Internet for their television needs, with Netflix being the movie giant now. Internet here in Belize is very expensive. A DSL connection with 1 mbps of bandwidth is about $60 per month.

I believe the fastest speed they have in Belize is 8 MB / second download, which would give you just shy of 1 MB / second upload and would cost you US $350 / month. The price drops with lower speeds. Most expats use around 4 MB speed, which can run you about $150 / month.

However, if you are off the grid like let’s say, Cerro Sands, where I live, what we use is the Mi-Fi device. A Mi-Fi is about the size of a cellphone. I believe My-Fi uses the cellular system and it’s wireless so everybody in our house can be on it at the same time. My daughters, my wife, and myself can all be on it at the same time. If you are downloading, it gets a little bit slower, but if you’re just searching and reading, it works very well.

The cost is pretty steep, but it’s actually lower than how it was a few years ago. The high cost of Internet service is because there are a very few companies in Belize that offer Internet and one is a government-controlled business. There will be an election in the next 2 years, and as a result, maybe they might reduce the cost.
