How much does it cost to have a cell phone in Belize?

Cell phones in Belize are very cheap. There are no payment plans in Belize; you will either have a postpaid phone or a pre-paid phone. The more you talk the more you are going to spend, but it is still quite cheap. You can have your brand new IPhone 5s, add a BTL chip or a smart number and you have service in almost the entire country, with calls for BZ $0.25 (12 ½ US cents) per minute.

To buy cell phone in Belize is expensive, but to maintain a cell phone is not. Relatively speaking most people pay as they go. They buy an unlocked phone, put a local SIM card in it and they charge the SIM card with credit. This is what the majority of people in Belize do.
Very few people will get landlines anymore and very few people will have self-service with their package. It is not like you could go to a Verizon store and get a free Galaxy...

Very few people will get landlines anymore and very few people will have self-service with their package. It is not like you could go to a Verizon store and get a free Galaxy S5 for $200 when you sign up for 3 years. Here in Belize, you buy a phone and then you get your service.

Cell phones here in Belize are so cheap, it's incredible. Some people buy in minutes (pre-paid), but I got mine hooked up with a phone company that bills me Belize $50 (US $25) a month. And that's pretty much close to unlimited talking within the country. I don't make a lot of long-distance calls. I use Magic Jack for that.
I use an iPhone 4, but most people around here have the iPhone 6. As far as I know, we can get the same apps on our...

The price for a cell phone in Belize can be anywhere from Belize $100 to $2,000 (US $50 - $1,000). People tend to buy their own phone and then buy the minutes using pre-paid cards. Alternatively, you could pay monthly, just the same as it is North America, but this can get expensive and it's hard to get track of.

There are two cell phone providers here in Belize: BTL and Smart. Every couple of weeks, BTL has a promotion that they call a double triple up. In other words, if you buy $10 worth of minutes they give you $20 credit. If you put $50 or more, they'll triple it so you get a $150 credit on your phone.
You can use the cell phones here to call anywhere in the world. I'm not quite sure how much it is per minute now, but It used to be as much as Belize 50 cents (US 25 cents) per minute.
But now there are so many other ways of communicating. For example, we use FaceTime a lot because most of my family has iPhones or iPads and FaceTime is free.

Belize has only two cellphone companies; Smart and BTL. The difference between the two is just a few cents on the per-minute calls. Coverage-wise, BTL has a wider coverage area than Smart. BTL has GSM and Smart has CDMA. Those are the main differences between these two companies.
The cost to make cellphone calls with BTL is 25 Belize cents per minute (12.5 US cents) and with Smart, it is 22 Belize cents per minute. All calls are charged per minute...

All calls are charged per minute regardless but they do have plans. The plans give you a certain number of minutes. Once you pass the limit, then they will start charging you a different rate.
If you have data going to your phone, you will pay additional for it and the providers will charge you per gigabyte. It costs US $15 for 1 gigabyte of data per month.

The cost to get a cellphone in Belize depends on what brand you buy. There are cheap phones and there are expensive ones. The latest Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge costs $2,500 Belize or US $1,250. This is an expensive phone, which only most people in the working sector can afford. There are also cheaper phones here in Belize. The cheapest phone would cost around $100 Belize or US $50.

The cost of cellphone service also depends on what kind of service you want. It costs $25 Belize (US $12.50) for a prepaid SIM card and then you put credits in it. Here in Belize, there are special days when the cellphone providers offer a “double-up” or “triple-up.” They usually have these offers on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and other public or bank holidays, such as Independence Day and Christmas. So for example, you buy a top-up card for $50, and they have a triple-up promo that day, then you will get $150 worth of calling added to your card. If you buy $10 and up, you will get a double-up. Aside from using prepaid service, you could also have a postpaid plan here in Belize. There are people who have open line cellphone service where they pay what they have used.
A phone call within Belize costs 5 Belize cents per minute up to 45 Belizean cents per minute. If you make calls outside of Belize, it costs more. A phone call to the US or Mexico could cost around $1.10 Belize per minute. (The exchange rate in Belize is fixed to 2 Belize dollars to 1 US dollar, so in order to get US dollar rates from Belize rates, divide in half.)
