Our minimum wage in Belize is about BZ $2.65 (US $1.33). Our workweeks are 45 hours long. If a housekeeper or a maid was paid minimum wage for a week, that would come to about US $60. However, in Placencia one would not be able to survive at that wage, because rent alone is about US $50 / week.

Depending upon your lifestyle or and the size of your house, you may not need a housekeeper to come more than once or twice per week. So, consider that for as little as $80-100/month, you might never need to do housecleaning again!
If you opt for a full time housekeeper, you will essentially get a maid, cook, housesitter, babysitter, secretary and companion for just US $500-600/month.
You will also be involving yourself in the local community and will probably be invited to participate in important events in your housekeeper’s family life, like weddings, birthdays and quinceaneras.

Housekeepers traditionally work 6 days a week with one day off. They should get overtime but most people in Belize don’t pay their workers overtime. You should.
It is possible to have housekeepers live with you. We had that situation recently and we provided their meals as well as accommodations. We took off $50 Belize (US $25) a week. So it works out to $90 Belize (US $45) a week, with a place to stay and their meals.
If you want to hire a housekeeper on a daily basis, usually a daily rate is about $40 Belize.

I wouldn’t say they spend a total of 8 hours because I think that is totally unreasonable to have somebody in your house for 8 hours, but you could be looking at anywhere from 4 to 6 hours.

We live in San Ignacio, out in Western Belize in what’s called the Cayo District, but the cost to get a housekeeper is pretty much the same in most in Belize. When you get out to the more touristy areas and on the islands or on the coast, you might see that rate go up a little bit and if you are out in some of the more remote areas, the rate will go down. If you used $15 as a baseline, that is a pretty good number.

I think Mark is a very generous person and I may come looking for a job soon. I'm more in line with Shannon and I pay my cleaner US $20 a day and she cleans my house and does all of my ironing, etc.
I'm a single, tidy guy and she only comes once a week.
